Had an hour or two on this, if anyone loved McRae 4 (as I did) and may be

My nephew has a PS2 that's about 2 years old, and is having a hard
time reading any CD based games (blue discs). I'm guessing this is the
ubiquitous laser problen.
My question(s) is(are), how much would sony charge me to get it fixed,

I have never owned a PS2, but these new smaller models seem really tempting,
esp as I work away a lot and would like to be able to watch DVDs.
What is the quality like? Do you NEED a remote handset to operate the disks?
If not, whats the benefits of having a remote?

Anyone know of a website that lists which ps2 games support two players? I'm  
having difficulty finding stuff that I want to play, that my niece and
nephew can play on together as well.

I've been playing this game for a few days, but have now spent the
