I have recently been watching through MASTER QUEST for the first time
(really good series), and I saw an episode which implied that a loose
pokémon was somehow "bound" to their pokéball and could only wander so
far away from it without encountering some sort of mental compulsion

In order to get some evolved Pkmn, the Pkmn in question has to be
holding a particular item (ex. Metal Coat with Onix --> Steelix) when
it is traded.
My question is: Is the held item "consumed" during the trade
