The Battlestar Galactica mod/total conversion of Freespace 2 now has a
stand-alone demo available for download. (380MB) You don't need
Freespace 2 installed to play the demo. There's a Mac version also
available and a Linux version shortly forthcoming.

So I've been playing X3 for a while and have mostly gotten over the
steep learning curve.
Got myself a couple of cargo ships and a bunch of combat ships, but
have mostly been ignoring the story till I get a nice bankroll.
