I'm sure this topic has been done before.. but I haven't found a
recent answer..
I have the early model Saitek Cyborg 3D. Nice joystick at the time but
started displaying the left drift problem and now it's pretty bad.

I've installed the original X on an athlon 64 3200 system with 1G ram
and a 6800GT. It's got the latest drivers (66.94) for the vid card,
and is running directX 8.1.
The problem is, when I try to switch to ANYTHING but the default

just find a copy of the Collection edition, after 10 years the game
still very fun to play, the only complaint was the music on CD audio
format, i rather they use midi as the original Tie fighter so the music
will dynamically change.

This is an idea I had some times back when playing Terminus, freespace and
the resurfaced when I briefly got into X2.
Basically,  a person buys the game and either plays it normally like in
Elite ,  trading to get more addons for improvements to his/her ship, buys
