What are they, and what do they mean?

I love playing Quake I & Quake II.
But I can't for live of me figure out what Quake III is about?
It has to be one of the worst games I have ever tried playing.

sh.t, where's Arqon? Where's supertech? Where's everybody who it's been so
long I can't remember their names. Where's aj and tomo? Why do I remember
them? Geribaldi, the pf dudes, red, muktheknife. Ok, so I'm going back to
1999 and 2000 and 2001. This was a fun hoppin place. Sad ...

I downloaded a map pak of Quake 2 DM levels for Q3. I extracted the
pak file into the baseq3 directory.
How to I play the maps? They do not show up on the menu.
