Is there any benefit to installing the expansions at the same time as
the main game? I know that with Knights, you get all the extra content
(spell books, etc.) so that probably helps out from the beginning, but
what about the actual new quest itself?

Two things bother me about spellmaking, which I'm otherwise very fond of:
Spells with an effect magnitude of 0-1, thus an average of 1/2, e.g. 0.5
hitpoint restored per second, cost the same as spells with an effect
magnitude of 1-1, even though the former are half as powerful.
