The game installs and runs properly (and off a virtual CD), but it seems
to have a drastically reduced color palette.
Are there any workarounds?

I have installed AOE III on my ASUS EEE PC which does not have a cd drive.  
When I try to run the game it asks for CD # 1.  How can I play on CD less
computer ?
