When I start AOE2, everything is fine. But when starting an actual game,
there is just a blank map. No trees, terrain, lakes etc. Just a large square
of grass. Also I've noted that the map screen in the right hand bottom is
blacked out.

I get just a black screen when I start my AoE II: where could the
problem be? How may I debug it?

I accidently hit somthing and now my AOE 3 is windowed & smaller.  The
'Maximize' rectangle is disabled and i already tried right-clicking on the
task-bar for maximize.  Any help, I didn't even think you could window it...

Can anyone tell me why I cannot alter the graphics settings on the expansion
pack?
The smoke plumes are solid blocks, making the game just about unplayable.
AOE 3 works fine, the smoke looks real but not when playing the expansion
