Yes. Just log in to Xbox Live and play.

It asks me to recover the gamertag when I try to sign in.

I beileve you can buy a memory card, store your profile on that, and
just put the card in whichever machine you want to use... Or, just swap
the hard drive over each time.

I will be swapping between machines fairly regularly and would like to avoid
moving something between them physically. Is there an optimal solution to
having different gamertags on each account to allow me to play games etc on
both.
For example - recover the gamertag on the console downstairs, which isn`t
always connected to the network, and buy the content on that. Now swap to
another gametag on this console, and recover the gamertag used to buy items
on the upstairs machine, thus allowing me to use the paid for content when
signed in upstairs. Would this work, bearing in mind I`d rather buy the
content in batches if it does :-)
Thanks in advance.

that would be my best guess at how you could do it without the need
for recovering tags or swapping anything about.

Been looking at it, and I think I can download the content upstairs on that
console using my gamertag, so when the g/f signs in to play her games she
can save them up there, since that`s where she`ll play most. I`ll play more
on the HD TV downstairs, because I can tel the difference - can you believe
she can`t spot the difference between 1080p and an old CRT TV? :-) So I
can sign in downstairs and play the content online.
It really should be easier than this!

Get a memcard and store your gamertag on it, the rest is easy.
