Is this really a good time to be discussing Pokemon teams? From what I
understand, the next set, Diamond and Pearl, will not only introduce new
Pokemon and techniques, but will actually alter the battle system as
well. Up until now, attacks have been classified as either "Attack" or
"Special" based on their element, like Normal-type and Ghost-type moves
would be based on the Attack stat and Psychic-type and Grass-type moves
would be based on the Special stat. In Diamond and Pearl, or so I hear,
the classification of an attack will be based on how the attack itself
is intended to be performed. For instance, the Normal-type Hyper Beam
would go from being Attack-based to Special-based, and the Electric-type
Thunderpunch could go from being Special-based to Attack-based.
Changing the classification of attacks could require changing how a
Pokemon's stats develop. A Pokemon that was good with certain moves
based on its stats rather than type could have its stat development
altered, or at the very least the player would have to reconsider his or
her strategies when using it.
If I may go on a tangent here, this reminds me of something I heard
about happening on TGP back in the day. Someone over there put a Dragon
move on a Dragonite (I think) to take advantage of its massive Attack
value, and someone from here chewed them out about how Dragon techniques
were Special-based and not Attack-based. The thought occurs that when
Diamond and Pearl comes out, you probably could put a Dragon-type move
on something to take advantage of its massive Attack value. Probably
Dragon Claw.
Anyway, my question is this: is Diamond and Pearl really far enough away
that we can discuss possibly outdated strategies?

Speaking personally yes I think that it is far enough away. I'm not sure
of the proposed release date in the UK but should imagine it won't be for
a couple of months away. The thing is that not everybody is going to have
them as soon as they are released and at least this way we are keeping
the group a little more active. I know I don't post here much, usually
because I feel that I don't really have the depth of knowledge required
to answer any but the simplest of queries. It does seem as though we have
a few more people taking part at the moment, whereas before it was mainly
people posting PW stories, now there is a more generalised discussion
going on.
