Because an awful lot of people DO still play it. The RPGs consistently stay
in the top ten for months. Speaking for the UK, Pokémon XD is number two in
the GameCube charts after being out for almost a year. Pokémon Emerald is
still number two in the GBA charts, and we're talking here about an update
to games now around five years old.
Admittedly, the fad aspect of Pokémon has died. Magazines no longer
dedicate specific sections to trickles of news on games about Pokémon safari
or for the trading card game, but the game is still immensely popular, and
remains one of today's best-selling franchises.
