Sony to Plug PS3 Games

Brushing off reports of delays for the PlayStation 3, Sony is readying
software for its updated game console.
March 1, 2006

Amid speculation that Sony may face up to a year delay in the launch of
its latest game console,  the company plans to plug the game lineup for
the PlayStation 3 in a private event in San Francisco on Thursday.

The event could shed some light on Sony's strategy for the
much-anticipated console. Industry analysts and insiders have
speculated that the Japanese consumer electronics giant may not roll
out the device until October.

Sony Online Entertainment spokesperson Courtney Simmons said the event
would preview titles that would be shown off at E3, the industry's
major game event in early May. She also said Sony executives would
answer questions about the company's strategy.

Previously Sony had set an estimated launch date for this spring and
analysts had expected the game console to hit shelves in time for E3.

But in February, investment bank Merrill Lynch speculated that the
debut of the PS3 could be postponed as much as six to 12 months, with
an autumn launch in Japan and a late 2006 or early 2007 launch in the
United States (see Sony May Delay PS3).

According to analysts and industry reports, Sony is waiting for
industry specifications to be finalized for the Blu-ray high-definition
DVD drive as well as for input/output video and sound. But Sony
announced Tuesday it will unveil freestanding Blu-ray DVD players and
software during May (see Blu-ray to Shine in May).

A later release date could affect major Sony sales in the next
generation console wars, where the formerly unchallenged Sony faces
now-eager Microsoft. Microsoft already launched its latest game
console, the Xbox 360, in November (see Xbox 360's Desert Launch and
Xbox 360 Starts Console War).

If Sony delays the PS3 for another year, Microsoft could gain valuable
market share against Sony.

Sony has decided to make its presence known with a private showing of
the console in San Francisco tomorrow.

Courtney Simmons, a spokeswoman for Sony Online Entertainment,
explained that the event will detail Sony's strategy for the PS3
(launch date, pricing and online plans, quite possibly) and attendees
could get a sneak peek at the games set to be shown off at E3, coming
up in May.

With the event only hours away, stay near your computer as we'll update
with any details that come our way.

Don't stay near your computers, folks! Go outside, meet other people, have
fun! That big round orange thing in the sky, that's the Sun - you can just
ignore that! The big news will still be there when you get back. ;)

God damn, we have the big white thing in the sky over here in
Scot-so-f.cking-baltic-land just now.  1:04am, and im freezing my nuts off
sitting naked on the computer, my nipples are so hard from the cold air they
could crack.  You see, im on route to bed and I always quickly sit on my
disgustingly smelly arse to check a few emails, and end up being a general
knobhead here for a while.  Dunno why im sharing this, but I like to let it
all hang loose at night time, let the bird out the cage if you will...

Or should that be the dragon out of the lair?   Yeah....

No wait!!!  The Jumbo Jet out of the Hanger...WoooHooo, thats definately the
one.

I'm gonna be surprised if Sony gives solid answers to those three
questions.  I'm expecting they'll (still) give a range for the price, a
launch date no more specific than a season, and most of the hard info will
be on the online plans.

They'll soon get to realize that there is a *huge* number of people who will
simply wait for PS3 no matter what, and would not even dream of buying an
X360 instead. OK, some may be tempted and buy X360, and...if this delay is
true, then even their finances will have recovered enough to buy a PS3 when
it finally comes out. It'll simply be too much to resist, and if not,
certain key games will be *impossible* to resist (Gran Turismo 5,
MGS4....'Ico 3', or whatever comes from that team).

Sony's firm grasp on the crown won't be dislodged by Microsoft, no way will
it, of that I have no doubt at all. Accuse me of fan-boysim though and you'd
just be so wrong - I actually wish Nintendo to be market leader! It's just
that I'm a realist, plain and simple. This race was over before it even
started, IMOHO.

Although I hope X360 is just successful enough to keep Sony on their toes,
as this is better for the consumer.....whichever console you own. In fact,
if they were 'neck and neck'...then that'd be even better for the consumer.
Competition is great for the end users, it means games get better and
better, as they try to gain ground on each other, and prices stay low.

Although I do still think Sony will be the clear winner in the end. M$ will
fall in 2nd, and Nintendo has a hardcore fan-base (like me) that will always
buy their machines/games no matter what, so they don't have to be part of
the race at all....they know the trick of staying highly profitable with
their own little slice of the pie. That's how I predict the future anyway.
We'll see if I'm right. :)

Entirely true. At the end of the day, the console that gets GTA first,
the console with the most games that allow you to put neon lights on
your car, and the console with the most games involving large numbers
of black men with gold chains shooting at each other will win in the
West.

LOL. Indeed. Although it's easy to stay away from such games, I do. The user
base of PS2 is so wide that it gets some real poo stuff - but dig deep, and
the gems are there. I like GTA to an extent, but it never makes my
top-ten.....and I despise True Crime type, overly violent GTA clones. But
for every ten games like that, there's one Metal Gear, God Of War, Ico,
SOTC - that is why I like PS2...second to Gamecube.

If there was any justice, Nintendo would be top dog. They make the most
innovative hardware and software, and have the best quality standards, IMO.
Ultimately though, I just think Sony have dug too deep into the public's
psyche with the Playstation brand for them to relinquish the crown now.
Although there was a time when Nintendo believed themselves to be
unstoppable (pity, they got too cocky and big for their boots - and burned a
lot of bridges with 3rd parties), so you just never know what *can* happen.

I personally believe if this market was split to the point where the three
big companies had a 3rd of the market each, that would be the best possible
situation for us, the gamers. I used to argue for the single platform, but I
started to really think about it - and I saw that if there was just one
top-dog, with no one to challenge them, they'd not have to try very hard at
all - and before you know it, it's just sequel after sequel of generic crap.
This is what the fan-boys have to understand, they love their 'brand' and
wish it all encompassing success....to blow the competition out of the water
so to speak. You read them on forums all the time, wishing failure on the
competition. It's stupid, and if that actually happened, they'd be far, far
worse off. Even though I don't personally did the whole Xbox thing, I wish
it equal success to Sony - for my own sake. Competetion keeps the quality
high, and the prices down.

Let's hope they are planning on answering questions. If it's just a
fluff event they'll get hammered for it.

Ideally I'd like:

1) Pricing and options (with hard drive? without hard drive?)
2) Launch timetable
3) In game screen-shots of launch titles

I don't think this is unreasonable if they are planning on bringing the
console out in the next 3 months. If it's another CES style Blu-Ray and
PSP fest it will be worthless.

Options like that only serve to fragment the market and does a disservice to
those that bought a console to get away from the PC upgrades/specs
mentality.

And two of those are still on the shelf, hence not 'selling out
worldwide'

X360 coming out only 3+ years after the Xbox also does a disservice to
people who hate the PC for demanding upgrades all the time. 5-6 years is
more like it. And so it should be.

November 2001 to November 2005 is 4 years. I guess, technically, that
qualifies as "3+". :^)

It's only 1 year short of what you would have liked instead of the 2
you make out to sound. But the thing you forget is that Microsoft and
Nintendo were last to market that generation.

The PS2/Xbox/Gamecube generation actually started with the launch of
the Sega Dreamcast in September, 1999. The generation lasted 6 years,
the only problem is that Microsoft and Nintendo missed the first two
years of it.

"For its part, Sony is saying that, contrary to popular perception, they
never intended to show the PS3 at DPS. "DPS is actually over and we have
made no new announcements concerning PS3," a rep told GameSpot. "We
never indicated that DPS was to be used as a forum to disclose new
information or demonstrate PS3 content.  DPS is designed as a forum to
bring our retail and publishing partners together for new-year planning
and this is the sixth conference we have hosted to do so."

Now wasn't that a waste of cross-posted nonsense.

Destination Playstation is/was in Florida. The new rumored event was to
be in San Francisco and should have started around 4 PM Pacific time (1
1/2 hours ago from this post.)

If they have anything to say about it it should be on some game-sites
by Midnight Pacific time.
