parallax-scroll - 09 Dec 2008 08:19 GMT TOKYO, Dec 9 (Reuters) - Japanese electronics maker Sony Corp said it will cut 8,000 jobs, scale back investments and pull out of unprofitable businesses as part of restructuring efforts to shave 100 billion yen ($1.1 billion) in costs.

I wouldn't be surprised if PS3 selling as badly as it is, combined with the deep recession we're just starting to go into (it will get much worse) spells the end of the PlayStation era by 2009 or 2010.
The game industry might be left to Nintendo and Microsoft.

Sony is not going to pull out of the video game console business because of one less-than-stellar generation, especially considering how dominant they were in the previous two.
As long as they're not overly ambitious next time like they were this time, they will be in better shape. They can still use some variant of the Cell and the Blu-Ray technology because by, say, 2010, more developers will be comfortable with the Cell technology and Sony won't have the same cost issues associated with Blu-Ray's launch.
I think it's very clear that there won't be any overly dominant video game console manufacturer at least through the next generation as the number of platform exclusives is dwindling in favor of cross-platform releases.

If that's true, however, then that means what few exclusives do exist will be all that more important. It also means that the console with the best first party developers will have the edge, and right now that's arguably Nintendo...
It also means that other factors will become more important in deciding which console to buy. This would include things like online services, additional features like the PS3 and 360's streaming abilities, and overall price. I hope Sony has learned that the public is just not going to be interested in a $500-600 console on launch day, no matter how nifty looking blu-ray movies are.
Sony has lost a number of exclusive titles this time around, and it'll be interesting if they can manage to bring some of those titles back, or at least make them cross-platform.

That depends on whether those exclusives are good enough to sway consumers to a console by themselves or with just one or two other exclusives. If in the next generation we only see 2 or 3 exclusive franchises for the Xbox and the same for the Playstation, their importance may actually dwindle as they could potentially only be attractive to the diehard loyalists.

Microsoft clearly has the weakest first party development of all 3 systems and software sales are through the roof. Nintendo has run away with hardware sales but clearly Microsoft customers are buying more games with their systems.
Arguments can be made for the advantages of both scenarios.
On the other hand, Sony has very strong first party development as well but the cost of the hardware is prohibitive so many gamers don't get to experience the fruits of that labor. First party development itself is not necessarily an advantage.

Sony won't need to slap that kind of a price tag on their next console. All that overhead came from the Cell and Blu-Ray technologies. By the time the next console comes around, this will be old tech. While the components may be updated from today's versions, Sony won't have to deal with the same initial "startup" costs anymore.
I think that while Sony will have an uphill battle to win back gamers disenfranchised by their poor decisions during this generation, they ultimately will fare a lot better next time around than they did this time around.
Sony isn't going anywhere, much to Jonah and Air Raid's chagrin.

The article I read also said Sony would be raising prices on some of its electronics. Now, I can understand needing to make more money from each sale, but with a recession on, demand is going to be DOWN. That is not the time you RAISE prices.
Even then, what prices are they going to raise? Does this mean no price drops for the PS3 in the spring? Higher prices for the 2009 models of TV and other A/V equipment? Even higher, over-priced VAIOs?

Even higher, over-priced VAIOs? Perhaps Sony will raise prices on its higher end equipment, but I can't see them raising the price on the Playstation 3. I don't think a console has EVER gone up in retail price.

There were rumors out of Sony Europe about a price drop this coming March but if things aren't doing so well, I can totally see Sony doing something like revving its hardware again and maybe bumping the 80GB to 100GB or so, and keeping the price at $400. Meanwhile, Sony could throw in an extra PSN download or something and keep the 160GB PS3 at $500. So, it's technically a "price drop" just without the whole spending less money thing but you'll be getting more with your money.

A strategy that worked very well for them in the past...

- Those 8,000 jobs are coming exclusively from their electronics arm. The video game division is not affected.
- Those 8,000 jobs represent only 4% of the entire Sony workforce.
- There aren't even 8,000 people working on video games at Sony and Nintendo combined.

Blig Merk - 10 Dec 2008 02:44 GMT Hey idiot, if you had read the article instead of just witlessly linking it, you would have seen Sony is laying off 8000 people OVER 2 YEARS until 2010 and those are from Sony Electronics manufacturing, not Sony Computer Entertainment. Sony Electronics has over 185000 and laying off 8000 during times of economic downturns are nothing unusual. That few of people over that long of a time means a lot of it will be accomplished through attrition. The 10 factory closures are also over a couple of years and amount to about 5 to 6 manufacturing plants. There is no indication how large these factories are or what products they produce or if they are just part factories that can be outsourced cheaper. Go get an elementary school education before you come back and show what an ignorant dickwad you are.
