This is the bandits in the farm mission? Did you talk to the group of
stalkers that also want to attack these bandits, they will take out most of
them if you do. There's more ammo/pistols on the way there (the little
trailer by the first small bridge) and in the surrounding buildings if you
poke around, also.
The missions and combat/movement in general get easier as the game
progresses and you acquire better weapons/armor.

is your friend. Also http://stalker.filefront.com
for mods and such. There are many difficulty/allweapon mods out, but I've
never tried them or know how hard they are to install. Be sure the patch to
1.003 first before starting the game! I'm still on my first time through
and loving every minute. The atmosphere is scary and intimidating, and the
AI challenging.

I had Stalker modded up really nice and it was a much better game for it but
I just rebuilt my PC so had to reinstall and start over. Two essential mods
are one that allows you to carry 150 of inventory instead of 50 and another
that makes the spawning far less frequent. In the original game I was
getting really sick of the enemies respawning every five minutes. Using that
mod really makes the game more enjoyable.
