Looks like Gamefaqs got bought out by Gamespy. They have totally
reworked the look and feel of the site. It doesn't have any of the
nice, hassle-free community supported atmosphere about it and the
forums really suck now. No doubt, the next step will be pop-up Flash
ads, ad panels all around the sides and top, and not too long before
-- subscription based. Just think, you will have to subscribe to post
game guides and probably a premium subscription to read game guides.

How can they charge for FAQs they didn't write, that were submitted to
the community for free by individuals? I think if I had a FAQ on there
and they started trying to charge for it, I'd make them take it off.

no doubt when you originally posted an FAQ, there was an agreement that you
surrender the rights to it or you allow them to have equal rights, something
like that.

They can charge you for the bandwidth, regardless of content, I guess.

Why on earth would anyone pay to upload a guide, only to have someone else
profit from their hard work?
I can see someone paying to download a guide, but not to upload one. If
anything the guide's author should be paid for their guide.

Yeah, guess what - now I have to lower the ad blocking threshold on my
firewall before the pages will load properly. Big surprise...

Oops, Gamespot not Gamespy. And they haven't actually started
subscription services yet but it is Gamespot and they started
subscription services on their site just to see additional pictures
and any videos. Can you doubt subscription services are not in their
plans for Gamefaqs?

I thought I read somewhere on their message boards that you can reset it to
the old look somehow trough your profile settings...?
(seems unlikely to me, by the way)

Knee meet jerk. I just looked at the site and it's far cleaner, easier
to use and probably makes money (I don't mind an ad or two, and the meat
of the content... the FAQs are in plain-text, so no ads).
I go to GameFaqs for 3 things: FAQs (check), upcoming releases (moved up
a screen I believe, so check) and message boards (check).
If they start charging, it's a different story, but don't cry wolf yet.
