I am normally an advocate of save anywhere, but I played through the
whole of Halo and never felt the need to save anywhere. A linear game
with frequent save points works well for me.

I agree with this. It actually kind of relieved the burden of having
to worry about it. Halo might have had a few things wrong, but the
saves and the multi-player worked well. I'm not into co-op play, so I
didn't miss it.

Halo had SO many checkpoints that auto-saved that i really don't think it
needed a seperate save-game option. The check points in Far Cry are a little
more widely spaced and are more debateable mind you.
