Just might go pick up a 9800 Pro this weekend, so wonderrig if it
would be worth it :)

I have a Xp 2400 CPU, 266mhz FSB and a Radeon 9600 Pro at the momment,
1 Gig of Pc2100 ram.

And thats the MAx Cpu my board can handle and the CPU MAx FSB is 266
can overclokc the FSB but not by much and it aint stable when i do.

So would a 9800 Pro allow me to turn up al the detail in the game as a
Resolution of lets say 1024 by 768 ? or maybe alittle higher ?

I tried it with my setup and the game was playable but it seems
sluggish not smooth, so i want back to medium detail and was fine, so
from that experiment a 9800 pro would make thegame smooth and fast ?

Did not us fraps so i dont know the FSP might do so just to see :)

Thanks for any help.

PS might get a Amd 64 3400 and 1 gig of pc4000 ram and plug in the
9800 pro into that that might run FarCry Fast, but prob not :)

Thanks again.

On a 2.2ishGHz (166MHz), 1Gb, 9700Pro I play(ed) at 1024, x4fsaa, x8aniso,
max details without any problems if that helps. The last few levels slowed
the frame rate obviously at times. I think I knocked fsaa back to x2 at
some point, but I won't swear to it. Besides, I was too busy enjoying the
ride to worry too much about tweaking.

1280x1024 was no good for me, the frame rate really took a nose dive. but
again I didn't experiment too much.

I reckon your system is about right, a 9800 pro would be wasted on your
machine as the rest of it wont be able to keep up with the 9800. your pc
will be the bottleneck.

I play Far Cry with a resolution of 1024*768 on on P4 1.4ghz, 1Go RAM
3200, Radeon 9600XT, everything on "very high" (expect the water on
"ultra"), and it works great.

I'm just waiting now for the latest patch (1.2), which increases some
stuff (and allows the unlimited saves)

Yeah, I have similar (& only 512DDR & a 9600 Pro) - I really don't
understand some of these yahoos having difficulties with uber-rigs...send a
boy to do a man's job! >;-)

Yeah, I still can't get the console save to work...oh well, doesn't need it
anyway.

I'm running Far Cry at 1024x768 max detail on my home setup  which is
similar to yours except I have 768mb PC2100 ram and a 9800pro.

Runs very smooth most of the time. Sometimes slows down a fair bit if there
are lots of enemies on screen, but 90% of the time it's a playable
framerate.

It plays great on an FX-51 (2.2Ghz), 2Gb RAM, Geforce FX5900 Ultra 256mb
All settings on Very High or Ultra, 1024x768, 40fps ish.....very smooth

I tried to run Far Cry on a similar system. But, soon after loading it the
engineer shouted "The engines cannae take the strain captain!" Soon after
this there was a shuddering in the pc box and then my keyboard exploded in a
shower of sparks. Immediately following this there was a containment field
failure. I tried the manual override, but it was useless. What followed was
an uncontrolled fire, followed by depressurization.

Depends on your tolerance for low frame rates.  I have an XP3200
Barton core cpu running with an ATI 9800 Pro & I find 1024 X 768 at
MEDIUM detail level *barely acceptable* with Far Cry.  Others here
obviously have a much much higher tolerance for sluggish framerates.
Contrary to popular belief, I don't feel the Far Cry engine is that
efficent, especially when compared to something like Painkiller (which
*flew* on my system).  Of course, Far Cry is doing a lot more with
detail & textures but it's still sluggish.  Far Cry will really stress
an ATI Pro 9800 at higer detail levels.

I suppose it all depends on what you think sluggish framerates are, I was
getting 40-60fps with all settings on Very/Ultra High at
1024x768......looked pretty good to me, but maybe you'd need 60+ fps?

Your nickname is the most bizarre thing I have ever encountered.  That
being said, I don't think there is a system that will offer completely
smooth experience in "Far Cry".  I swear that the AI became smarter
when I increased my system ram last Friday.  Maybe I was
hallucinating, but changing from 256Mbs to 512 under clean WinME
actually had a huge difference.  The framerate was actually pleasant
and swapping decreased by half.  Under WinXP, I'm positive that
1000Mbs isn't exaggeration for the game.  9800 Pro would most likely
help your playing experience a notch or two.

He is obviously a B5 fan who does great disservice to the phrase.
