I play mostly first person shooters online - specifically, UT2004. I've
always noticed that sometimes I feel like my key typing isn't being
recognized - I can't for the life of me dodge off walls and climb to
another level as I've seen people do. Could it be my old PS2 keyboard?
Would a USB one help? Would a "gaming" keyboard be even better? Like a
G15 or Razer? My rig is a AMD X2 3800+ with 2gb RAM, Radeon 1950 and a
Razer AC-1 soundcard. I don't need bells and whistles - just fast,
reliable, tactile response. (I suppose macros wouldn't hurt...)
Thanks!

Get a Fang Gamepad. I find it helps quite a bit with FPS. It comes with
most games already programmed but you can change the existing ones to suit
you if you want and you can dreate your own. One nice feature is that it
prints out keycards for you showing the mapping on the gamepad for each
game. I paid $30.00 for mine.

I observe similar thing in FEAR Multiplayer and in HL2DM. I think
people twisted their settings (in configuration files, through the
console input etc). I think it has nothing to do with the keyboard.

All keyboards respond pretty much the same. It might be worth getting a USB
just to see if that helps. Can't hurt, right? Just get one you're
comfortable with. Gaming keyboards are way overrated, IMHO.
This got me thinking about a way to kinda cheat in these types of games,
though. I don't cheat at games, but I thought it would be interesting if it
would work. If a game trusts your computer to report when you pressed a key,
rather than when the server received the key, it could work.
Let's say you really have a ping of 50 or so. Your NIC/game/whatever is
setup to delay all responses to packets for an additional 150 ms. However,
when you press a key, the computer immediately sends the packet, but claims
it was pressed/sent 150 ms before it actually was. So for instance, if a
rocket is coming right at you, you strafe left and fool the server into
thinking you were strafing 150ms before you really were. Should help with
reaction times, once you get used to the jerkiness of your movements. Your
ping will report as around 200, but you're really playing with a 50 ping
plus premptive movement.
Kind of like an old-school high ping bastard that nobody can hit because he
isn't really where the server is reporting.
Is this even possible?

I really like my Saitek Eclipse II. Very tactile, heavy enough to never
move in a frantic fire-fight and, as I like to play in the dark, it does
have subdued key lighting so I can hit all the key combo's.
Oh, and in UT2004 you can enable jumping higher with 'setjumpz' if you
want to cheat ('z' is 500 default so set it higher)... or are they
rocket-jumping? If you want to do it the hard but best way there are
guides such as...

Thanks for the tips, everyone! And great jump to the jump guide shawk -
very illuminating. I did happen to have an unused USB keyboard lying
around - I don't know why it didn't occur to me to try it. It is in fact
quite an improvement over my old mushy Microsoft PS2 keyboard, but it
still doesn't "feel" all that responsive. So after a little research, I
went an ordered a Logitech G11 - it's been quite well reviewed. I'll let
everyone know how it is.
Thanks again,
-Jay
