I've already spent all my talent points on Fire... Should I re-think my
philosophy, and Go all-out Arcane, or chill? I am only Level 15, and would
like to take the best course of action that will reward my efforts the most
later. Any advice appreciated. I've looked at online guides, but those
don't offer what I'm looking for. The "well-balanced" seem to be quite
popular, but I like to roleplay, and theme my character according to an
almost dogmatic power. Is Arcane that good, that one would like to max it?
Please advise... I'm still very new at all of this.
Best regards,
Me. ;-)

All out arcane works best when you have lot of +damage gear IIRC. I found
fire/arcane extremely good fun when levelling (taking the arcane tree up to
presence of mind) - certainly the quickest at killing single mobs although
not nearly as mana efficient or able with multiple mobs as frost (which I
respecced to at level 59). I would say that frost/arcane or fire/arcane
would be a much better for levelling and change to arcane if that's the way
you want to go when you are a much higher level and have accumulated some
+spell damage stuff.
There are some guides out there - have a look at

Going all Fire gets you the highest dmg spells and some nice procs and
dmg bonuses, but has some downsides:
1) Mana efficiency is bad, and you may easily go /oom against elites,
a tough boss, or in PVP.
2) What happens if your target is highly fire resistant? This is
rare for mobs (unless you're in MC) but not so rare in PVP, especially
if they know you're a fire mage and they have Wardrobe for quick change
to all their fire resist gear.
3) Your big nuke Pyroblast has a 6-sec cast that is usable only as an
opener in PVE, or against a lone sheep, and basically NEVER in PVP.
Alternately you can go Fire/Arcane, aiming for a 31/20 end-build, and
this still keeps most of the good fire stuff (and Blast Wave with
Combustion in a PVP crowd or with stealthed rogues nearby is REALLY
fuggin fantastic) but you still suffer from the points above.
Or slightly different, go 30/21 Fire/Arcane and gain your Presence of
Mind so your Pyroblast becomes instacast once every 3 mins, but you lose
Combustion. Can't have everything.
The most common compromise is Arcane/Fire instead, 31/20, so you lose
Combustion of course and some of your fire dmg enhancers, and say
bye-bye to Blast Wave (/cry) but you make up for it with Arcane Power
(for intense PVP encounters) and some other dmg/mana/regen helpers. You
also get most of the "your choice" goodies in the Arcane tree
(Evocation, Improved Counterspell) which you'd have to make tough
decisions about if you only had 20 or 21 points to spend.
Most knowledgeable lvl 60 mages say you gotta re-spec to Frost/Arcane
for the endgame and that it can even work in PVP, but I've never done it
so I'm still a pure Fire mage at heart. :)
In any case at lvl 15 most of the above issues are way ahead of you, but
I suggest you aim for some breed of fire mage with 31/20 or 20/31
Fire/Arcane until lvls 50-60 at which point you can make decisions about
frost or not. Fire gives you an easy leveling machine. It sounds like
leveling as a Frost mage can be viable as well, but it's trickier and
slower to finish fights.
Of course what really matters is what's fun to you. Watching a POM
Pyroblast in PVP trigger Impact and Ignite along with a giant damage hit
(i.e. "the Nuke") was always an endorphin rush for me.

I've written a few writeups on mages and talents. Browse the boards for
"Mage Talents" and you should be able to find my most recent posts.

that´s an early stage, I have fire-spec only and am lvl 42 and it´s o.k.
Fire is good damage. You could of course also use the advantages of the
other trees
check wowvault.ign.com they got a good talent point simulator

For a newbie mage, I'd go frost - at least until you have Frost Nova's cooldown
reduced to minimum. I believe that requires 7 points (L 16 from scratch). Frost
Nova and Blink are a lowbie mage's most valuable spells.

Lot's of choices fot young mages!
Basically it boils down to
- do you want to hit hard & fast even if it means you may have to run
away or die, and you don't mind a bit of downtime to drink
*this is a fire build; if you are always soloing, both fire and ice are
good choices, but if you are always grouped, fire is a bit more delicate
to manage. I went all fire until I had everything then went arcane and I
loved it; power and destruction! But I also learnt how to manage aggro,
because in a group once I got aggro it was very hard for anyone to take
it back = wipe or mess
- or do you want to be able to control whats around you, kill at a
slower pace but have less downtime and probably die less often?
*this is a frost build. I respeced frost after level 60, and have been
frost for several months now. You kill slower, but then you slow the
mobs & players around you, so you have more time. You won't have as much
problem with aggro and you will be good at protecting other cloth
wearers once you have nova (my priests love me as a bodyguard,
apparently it's not all tha common; I keep an eye on them and when in
trouble a quick nova on an incoming mob gives the tanks time to get
thier whilst the priest doesn't have to move at all and can keep healing.)
- or do you want to expiremnt
I have never tried an all elemental build, or a predominantly arcane
build....
For me the biggest change was that with a fire mage your defense is your
attack; with a frost mage you actually end up defending with novas and
shields... when I weant from one to the other I kept feeling I'd failed
because I had a mob hitting me - until I learnt to manage nova and
shields, when I realised getting hit wasn't necessarily a sign of
failure for a frost mage .
On the RP side: I was Fire fire fire and everyone new it. I dressed my
mage in red and shouted gleefully everytime she got a nice big roasted mob.
When I respecced it was because the Fire Spirits told my mage that if
she wanted to absolutely master Fire one day she would have to first
master its opposites. Other fire mages commisserated with her. Which
means she's got an arcane spec coming up sometime in the futur. And when
she does go back to fire sh'ell ahve a really good reason for a party.
