I'm Currently using the Scryer's Blade of Focus with the Talisman of
Nightbane:
http://thottbot.com/i34895 with http://thottbot.com/i28603

BUT, I also have an Amani Divining Staff http://thottbot.com/i33494 in
my bank.

I had someone tell me that staff would be a better choice if it had the
right gems. What do you think?  ..and if so, which gems?

I'm a frost mage, if that makes any difference.

any opinions are appreciated.

Do you raid?  If so, is your spell hit capped?  Spell hit is the top
consideration for a raiding mage, and gems are the easiest way to up
your spell hit.

Actually it's 126 for frosties due to the Elemental Precision 'Ghost
Hit' bug.  So if you have spell hit gems or gear you are wearing for
its spell hit bonus you can get rid of some.

Nope... I think you can safely rely on it for a while.  Check Wowwiki
or elitistjerks etc. if you don;t believe me, or just check your miss/
resist rates with a damage meter.

Your currrent setup looks significantly better.  Even at your gear
level, spell damage is worth more than spell crit, so no matter what
gems you put in you can't beat the sword and offhand.  (Unless you
need the sockets for flexibility, meta-gems, or othyer purposes, but
it's doubtful.)

And you could get a better badge offhand in the shape of Fetish of the
Primal Gods or Sapphiron's Wing Bone.
