Age of Conan dev: Gamers tired of Warcraft
------------------------------------------------------------------

Quest designer says there is a "feeling on the Internet" that WoW is
losing its appeal.

Gamers are getting tired of World of Warcraft, according to the
developer of upcoming fantasy MMO Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures.

Speaking in an interview with VideoGamer.com, quest designer Joel Bylos
said that while "everybody working in the industry respects WoW", there
is a "feeling on the Internet" that it is losing its lustre.

Blizzard's World of Warcraft has proved to be a gaming phenomenon since
its release in November 2004 and currently enjoys 9.3 million active
subscribers across the globe.

When asked whether he thought people were getting tired of WoW and might
be looking for something different, Bylos said: "Yeah. There's
definitely that feeling on the Internet. You get that just from online
communities, which of course we all pay attention to as well."

He added: "But I think one mistake a lot of people make is they design a
game to be WoW and WoW was successful on its own two legs and that's
what Conan is going to do."

AoC is a violent fantasy MMO set in the universe of Conan the Barbarian
and is scheduled for a March 2008 release on PC and sometime after that
for Xbox 360.

If it is true, just for the sake of argument, why should he be fired
for stating a truth?

Let's not forget the Oblivion-esque system requirements need to play
AoC.

Warcraft is also very popular because you don't need a suped-up
machine to play it.

AoC not only has to fight against WOW, it also has to fight against
that Pirates of the Burning Seas MMO as well as the other supposed
"wow killer" with the orcs/elves in it (forget the name).

I am not getting tired of World of Warcraft. I am not getting tired of Final Fantasy XI
either.

I think this quest designer Joel Bylos is just hyping his own crap. Actually sounds more
like prayer from him huh.

I bet he is also one of the curmudgeons here in the newsgroup.

What character and what server is he on in WoW ?  We all can put him on our list. Know
what I mean ?

"feeling on the internet"... I guess it's a way of saying "We want to make
people believe that WoW is dying so that they'll come and play *our* game
instead, but we don't have any evidence to support it. I suppose we could
run a poll, but we might not get a result that we like..."

Gamers might be surprised to hear that.

Yep. And the new Lich King expansion won't help a bit:)

Pretty much speaks for itself

There's that "feeling on the internet" again.

Having said all that, I'll definitely have a look at it... It'd be stupid
not to.

Exactly.
I think there ARE several people in the hardcore gaming community,
who are getting a little tired of playing WoW, but that leaves a
few importaint points open:

1. Those people have had tons of other great games all along, which
they probably also do play, and yet they still keep an account in WoW.

2. Those people are in fact a minority among the 9.3 million
subscribers. WoW did not build it's enormous fanbase on gamers
alone. There is a significant portion of very casual players,
who are not likely to jump ship because of a new game, once they
have buried themselves in WoW. To them, the huge investment of time
is not something that you simply leave behind, unlike the gamers.

3. The people willing to jump are an outspoken bunch, thereby
making up a lot of the clatter, but remaining a small minority.
WoW is here to stay. To a huge portion of players, the sentimental
attachment is too great.

And then there are also the many people who simply do not agree
with the statement, and are still perfectly happy with WoW.

I agree.

Every new MMORPG that comes along is always touted by someone as a WoW
killer.  Much like every FPS that comes out now is claimed to be a
Halo killer.  Someone is always going to jump onto that wagon and ride
until its eventual crash.  Its not surprising that another game
developer would eventually jump on this train, what better way to
promote their own game?

The only thing that is going to kill WoW is Blizzard themselves.  When
they fail to update the game to offer something new, thats when WoW
will die.  TBC may have had a lot of the same, go kill X number of
this mob, collect this item, kill this guy, go talk to this guy, but
it also introduced some things that were new to WoW.  Flying mounts
made travel easier, daily quests made gold grinding easier, and lots
of easily grindable factions so you can pick and chose gear for your
character.  Better 5-man dungeon design and smaller raid sizes helped
a lot also.  2 new races and opening up previously faction specific
classes to both factions were nice touches.

WotLK will have siege weapons and an outdoor PvP zone which is
definitely something I an interested in seeing.  The addition of the
death knight class will also be something interesting, though I fully
expect to see every conceivable variation of the name Sauron.  Who
knows what might be in any future expansions beyond that.  You'll most
likely also see the sudden rush back to WoW that we saw with the
release of the last expansion.

Let this guy blow all the smoke he wants.  In the end this kind of
hype will run the same lifecycle as the "LotRO will kill WoW" crap
that we all saw spammed in the official WoW forums prior to its
release.

That's one of the few MMO's that I haven't actually tried yet... from the
outside looking in, it always seemed kind of... I dunno, soft? Made for
kids? <shrugs> I don't know :) Weaksauce?

Bah, whatever :)

ROTFL!!!

What a joke! You do realise that this is a PC NG, don't you? Well, we've had
Halo killers for years, because the game is f.cking sh.t. In fact Halo was
killed by Half Life, Far Cry, Painkiller, NOLF, Crysis, Bioshock and just
about every other half decent FPS game there has ever been. God I just love
the weigh that console newbie's minds work.

Agreed, heh.  I played Halo when it first came out, but soon moved on.

Consoles are where the market is. It dwarfs the PC game market.

(I play on PCs, not consoles, so it's not like I like that fact.)

And it's "way".

Which is exactly my point.  Every game will be touted as a killer of
another game.  Games eventually die on their own anyway, and its
really just coincidence when a game death coincides with the release
of a game touted as its killer.

I wouldn't say it's *entirely* a co-incidence.  After all, it's no
co=incidence that the camel's back broke right after you added that
last piece of straw. ; )
But considering people are going to be calling pretty much *every* new
game, the "killer" game, they've pretty much going to have to get it
right eventually.  ; )

Its my belief that games die out on their own.  If people weren't
already bored with playing them, they wouldn't be looking at the next
big game coming out.  I have no intent on playing AoC, I'm still
having fun playing WoW.  But I'm sure there are lots of people out
there getting a little tired of WoW, or just need something to pass
the time until WotLK, and those will be the people to play AoC.  Them,
and of course, all the people who just got banned for botting.

You might note that at no time did I say I was a console player in
that post.

As far as consoles go, I have a Wii.  I don't have an Xbox, or a 360.

What my post was about had nothing to do with how good any other games
are.  My post was only about how everytime a new game in a genre comes
out, its touted as being a killer of the previous king of that genre,
or a killer of the game that made a name for that genre.  Every MMORPG
that has come out in the past few years has been touted as a WoW
killer.  WoW isn't the newest MMORPG, nor is it the first, its simply
the king right now.  LotRO was called a WoW Killer, now AoC.  And
there have been others.

I don't play many FPS games.  Doom and Quake, and for a while the
countless WWII games until they all started to mush together
essentially becoming one big blur of history.  I played Halo once, on
my brother's Xbox, and didn't find anything special in it that other
FPS games had already done.

Then there was the entire last sentence of your post which made my
brain want to pack its suitcase and go on vacation.  First, I'll
assume you meant way, not weigh.  If you meant weigh, well, our public
school system has done you a great disservice (your lack of reading
comprehension not withheld from that comment either).

Second, what would being a newbie have anything to do with it and what
in my post qualified me as a "console newbie?"  Fact is, I've owned a
video game console since the first Nintendo came out.  Thats well over
20 years of console ownership.  So exactly how many years of console
ownership do you need to no longer be a newbie?

So, I'll just re-summarize what my comment (which was posted 5 months
ago, and you're just finding it now?) was about.  Its not about one
game being better than another.  Its about the perception of games
released subsequent to a previous highly regarded game of that genre.
Every MMORPG that comes out is touted as a WoW killer.  Every FPS game
that comes out is touted as a Halo killer.  Sonic was a Mario killer.
Call of Duty was a Medal of Honor killer.  Are these games really
better than the games they supposedly kill?  Thats a matter of
personal perception.

I've more than likely wasted my time.  You probably still won't
understand anything I wrote, come back with some stupid comment
showing how out of context you take anything I say, and probably do it
about 5 months.  See you in October.
