Hi guys, I've downloaded a load of extra map files for Q3A. I unzipped
the files to the following location

C:\Program Files\Quake III Arena\baseq3

...which now contains the .PK3 files for the new maps, in addition to
the old pak0 and q3config files. However, I'm stuggling to find how to
actually get into the maps in the actual game. I've tried typing /map
file.pk3 and /devmap file.pl3 into the console, but all I ever receive
is an error message saying 'Can't find map maps/file.pk3'

Can anyone offer assistance? Incase it matters, it's a relatively new
laptop running Vista (which doesn't seem to have any other problems
running Q3A.)

TIA

Have you tried loading the map after selecting "Skirmish" under
"Single Player"?  I have all my maps in the baseq3 directory and am
able to play them all.

Here are some things which could've gone wrong.
- make sure that the map files are .pk3 format. If the map is in
folder/zipped extract the map file and place it in baseq3 folder
- some maps are mod specific, they'll run only in the specific mod

There are 2 ways to load the map
- load from skirmish/multiplayer interface
- use /map <map name>, here the map name is not the map file name. To
find the map name, open the map pk3 file with winzip/winrar and read
the text file.

Hope this solves the problem

Winblows probably renamed them to .zip files.

You were close. The syntax is:
/map file

not
/map file.pk3

Of course, the standard is to name the .bsp inside the pk3 the same as
the pk3 so if that does not work you actually need to open the pk3
files and look in the \maps folder to see the actual name of the file.
If the file is called mymap.bsp type:
/map mymap
or
/devmap mymap

Pk3 files are zips. Should be able to open with any unzipper.
