Not to be flippant, but are you *sure* they're hacking? I've been accused of hacking before, and I don't. When you have an overshield and a good understanding of the capabilities of the weapon that your foe happens to be wielding at the particular time, you can survive a lot.
There are games with mods, but they apply to all players. When you don't know what they are it can be hard to deal with.
Most games aren't modded and most players I've found aren't actually hacking.

It makes the game suck.. along with TK ers and all the other bullshit...
I just tried Unreal tournament 2004, much more fun .. so far less lag too...
I think my Halo days are over....

In playing on the X-box, which of course, can't be hacked without the other players knowing about it, them being sat next to you, and all, I've noticed that a clever player, with a good grasp of the strengths and weknesses of both his weapons, and those of his opponents, can often appear damn near indestructible, especially if they make good use of the natural cover in the level, and have an overshield.
I've seen a situation where a player like that went up against 3 others, all reasonably good at the game, and he was the one who walked away from that firefight. Still on full health, IIRC.
It doesn't take hacking to stay alive, just being very good at the game is often enough

I can have a shield, shotgun, and full health and when met with a foe, I can shoot him in the head 4 or 5 times while strafing. I hear the little horn sound when I hit him. He turns around and with one pop, I'm watching myself get stepped on by him while he steals my ammo. I played the entire game in two weeks, a few hours a night, not every night. I am running a P4 with a good video card, so there's no slow downs there (well, not many). My ping is like 31. There's got to be something going on when some guy gets 20 frags in 2 minutes, while I have 2. There's no point in even playing with that kind of action. I know my weapons, I've read up on strafing and dodging, and I've played until I'm dreaming about the stupid thing.
There's got to be something funny going on, NO?

I can say that I've been accused of hacking when I didn't. However, I've so far not seen a hack that applies to only one player, so, if you can hear what weapon he is using, go and find it and see if it does the same for you. Also find that player and track his movements and see what he does, there may be a particular power up that he goes for that is over-juiced, you can always do the same thing.
Bascially once I determine a server is mod'ed I ask the host. If he tells me, I may stay and play with it. If he refuses I just leave. There are other servers out there.
I don't think I've found anybody hacking a game in the full version so far. Just the eval.

It was nice to be able to just watch and learn from other better players. Is there no way to do that with Halo?

No there isn't, though I wish there was.
I played a GREAT mod the other day... the guy basically grounded the banshee so when you tried to fly it it would just sorta flap and bounce around, never getting very far and making the occupant a sitting duck. Outstanding.

Tiger - 08 Mar 2004 21:39 GMT I mod'd BG and I have the banshee firing two homing plasmas on the primary gun and the old cannon drps 40 frag nades, lol It's a bomber now Sniper is automatic with a 10 rd clip and tons of other chnages It just make it a fun mod to goof on as you really can't do CTF on it Rockets home, assault rifle shoots needlers that also home no matter what you do Rockets and needlers once locked on chance the banshee until you slow down or stop.....then u die We laughed so hard watching folks trying to shake them
I have the ppf of it if anyone wants it Hogs are mod'd Ya can drive from the back, the passenger, etc Driving from the passenger u can shoot two guns and throw nades all at thesame time

Is that why I can never come close to the highest frag score?

Just kidding
Seriously, most of the time the one with the highest score is just the cheapest player. Spawn killing with a hog is probably the most efficient way to kill in a large game, I'll often win this way rather easily and only die once or twice due to the constant stream of poorly armed spawners. Very cheap though. The tank is even worse, sit back in the shadows and spawn kill 'em all, very very easy, proves nothing.
The best slayer games are BG with no shees or tanks and unlimited plazma 'nades, or Hang 'em 'High with default weapons.

To me Hang'em High is probably the best slayer level, it's close, lots of cover and some good elevation. Generally I prefer CFT or Team King or something where working with other people matters, as it adds some dimension to the game. The hardest is when you're playing against people that are in communication with each other while your team is full of a bunch of n00bs that don't know how to work with someone and that don't see the big picture. But finding somebody online that can work with you is very cool.
On bigger maps, slayer is kind of dull, CTF or King gives the boad focus.

Scott Kindorf - 23 Apr 2004 06:40 GMT I would call shooting 4 rocket volleys at a player and still having them do a one-shot kill with their pistol a "cheat".
Happend 3 times last night on a server that, in the servername, claims to host Blood Gulch all day/all week - I think you can figure out the name with that info pretty easily.

Bob Smalls - 26 Apr 2004 01:48 GMT It could just be lag. I had a couple of occasions where I saw the animation for a vehicle flipping begin as I hit it with a rocket 3 times, but apparentlyI missed altogether and got ran over :-( Often when you get a "one shot kill" it could be that you have been shot a number of times but don't hear all of the shots. This happens to me quite often, but my ping is usually 200 at best, and it would get worse with more players on the server. This complaint has been around for a long time on multiplayer games. Pity there isn't a punkbuster for Halo.

Try to stay out of modded games. Usually you can ask the host if you're not sure.
I haven't played for a couple of weeks, but I've been asked if I was cheating simply because I was cleaning house on a server with average players. Like the others said, you can do well if you choose your weapons, get into a rhythm, use natural cover, and don't let the bastards get you down. Or run you over.
