Halo On Line Problems

Playing the Halo PC demo, and I have a couple problems.  First, whenever I
quit a multiplayer game it pops back to the main menu instead of the server
list.  Has this been fixed in the full version?

Second, all multiplayer servers I have tried are very laggy.  I do not have
a frame rate issue, the single player game plays just fine.  Plus I know
what network lag feels like, it's not the same as slow frame rate.  I get
warping and items don't always pick up, that's network lag.  It really shows
that this game was originally written for broadband only, as there does not
seem to be any client side prediction.  Are the servers for the full game
any better?  Anyone know if they are going to do something about client side
prediction?

Having already played through the full game on the Xbox, the multiplayer is
the only real reason that I would want to get the PC version.  I hope the
full game works better than the demo, because so far I am not impressed.

I have had the lagginess problem on every server I have gone on, in
either game of the demo. It seems the user serving the game on their
machine has better responses. I do get traffic on my router when I get
the red X icon and other players and objects seem to be updated during
this time. I don't see what would change in the real game, except access
to more maps or more weapons.

It is also hard to use the search for server for online games, because
when you try to connect and get a server full dialog, you have to start
from the beginning.

Not in a hurry to buy this one.

FWIW, my UT3 online experience is wonderful (demo and full).

I feel the lag problem too and it is the only reason between buying a full
game from playing the demo now.  The lag problem still exists in single
player when there are lots of objects in the same scene, but even a few
people fighting in the multiplayer lags my computer to single digit frame
rate.  Also, the game seems to be entirely designed for broadband usuage,
since even the slightest delay in network makes objects in game disappear
and reappear.  I have played games with comparatively better looking scenes,
but Halo's performance is the worst I have ever seen in a PC game.

While Halo`s poor performane is an issue I`ve been playing multiplayer with
few problems and I`m on 56k.  I get better ping than on UT2003 and although
I`m not likely to win often I am regularly coming 2nd or 3rd. With BB I`d be
kicking serious butt!....lol

1st I didn't think the Demo would let you play Multi-Player online.... hmmm,
Ohwell, I bought a legit copy...  So anyways...

I play Halo online almost every night w/ no problems....  I will admidt, I
did have to cobble together a new machine to play it but I play fine now..

I had a PIII 633, 768 MB ram, 100+ gigs HD, and a ATI Radion 7200 w/ 32 MBs
ram on Win2K and a a cable modem connection....

I got really crappy frame rates.  I mean unplayable...  Most of the time I
got 10-12 FPS, if I got 20 fps, I was overjoyed...  Often I got 1-3 FPS, got
pissed and turned it off...
When I played in single player mode I never had this problem, but whe I play
in mutli-player it went to sh.t...  I almost think there is a different
engine or something that computes screen redraws or something...

Anyway, I bit the bullet an spent a little chedda to upgraded my machine a
bit.. I basicly ploped in a new Mother Board, CPU, Ram and Video Card int my
case.  The new stuff is PIIII 1.5 GHZ with 256 MBs ram, 100+ gig storage,
ATI Radion 6500 Pro w/ 256 MBs ram and winXP....  All in all I think I spent
about 500.00 or just a little under...

Now I almost always get 30-45+ FPS, the only time I ever get lower is if,
there are like 16 players in site, everyone is in the air (certain levels)
or if the server is laggy...

Using the multi-player server lister tool or whatever its called, I use
filters...  I filter out all Full servers, All Empty Servers, and all severs
that have over a 100ms ping time...  Now this does lessen the amount of
servers avalible, but there are still plenty out there...  Plus sometimes I
run my own on my laptop...

Also, 2 of the guys I work and play against alot have dial up and they
rock...   They don't complain at all about lag...

Now that I have upgraded my machine the only complaints I have are about my
own skills :) and TK'ers..  I mean there could always be some tweaks, but
mostly there are a few features I'd like to see, such as:

Ability to turn TK on or off
Ablity to autoban Repeat TK'ers (you can tell them by score, they'll be in
the negatives, like -5 you know whats going on)
Ability to Speak from server to ask players question about performance and
such
patch to keep server from randomly crashing or shutting down.

Just a few that I can think of as I type, I know I had a bunch more...

I really liked the control or options we had with Half-Life Servers...

The lag problem is caused mainly by one user joining the server who has not
checked that his network settings for the game are correct.  If everyone
playing has their network settings correct, then there should be a lot less
likelyhood of lag. - That said, the update patches released by Microsoft
recently have introduced far more lag during booting of players for killing
teammates. V1.0 of Halo worked perfectly if everyone had their network
settings correct (though it's criminal that they failed to include force
feedback!).
