ok, now this might seem like a no brainer. a total 'DUH!' and something that
would make you say "no sh*t, a**hole!".  but this is actually noteworthy.

dispite several YEARS of guessing, speculation, rumor, reports, leaks,
almost-official and semi-official word, there is FINALLY confirmation that
XENON, the next-generation Xbox, likely to be called Xbox 360 is coming out
this year.
yes, from Bill Gates himself.

now ATi and SEGA are in the picture too, since ATi has designed the Xenon's
graphics processing hardware, and Sega is providing important software, and
some for launch.

without further delay, the actual article about Xbox 360's   now-confirmed
2005 launch.

Gates confirms Xbox 360 launch this year, talks up multimedia

Rob Fahey 15:40 03/05/2005
Microsoft chairman breaks the silence on Xbox 360's launch date

Speaking at a business writers' convention in the United States, Microsoft
chairman Bill Gates has confirmed that the next-generation Xbox console will
launch this year, and once again promoted the new system's multimedia
capabilities.

Breaking with the company's policy of staying silent in public on the
question of when the new console, widely believed to be called Xbox 360,
will launch, Gates told the Society of American Business Writers and Editors
that the system will ship in the current year.

Speaking about high definition displays, he asked rhetorically when the
"year of high definition" will be - and followed on to say that it would be
"this year, because we're going to ship this next Xbox."

His comment is the first public acknowledgement by the company that it plans
to ship Xbox 360 before the end of the year, although it's been generally
accepted around the industry for some time that the console will arrive in
October or November.

Gates also talked briefly about the multimedia functionality which will be
offered by Xbox 360, comparing it to the firm's Media Center PC software.
"If you're used that menu, when you use this Xenon [the codename for Xbox
360], you'll see a menu a lot like that, that lets you get photos, TV, music
and all those different things," he explained.

It's still not clear, however, whether Xbox 360 will offer this
functionality in all of its retail versions. Several reports have indicated
that the system will ship with two configurations, one of which, lacking a
hard drive, will be less capable as a multimedia device.

Many questions about the new console are expected to be answered next week,
when MTV broadcasts a television special about the Xbox 360 - airing on the
evening of May 12th in North America, and on May 13th worldwide.

You know what the sad thing is, Microsoft doesn't even need to release it
this year.  There is no reason to release a console when there isn't
anything wrong with the current one.  Why would you need to buy it when all
it is, is a upgraded version of the original, nothing more.

Come on, the way things are nowadays as soon as it's released we'll be
hearing "I can't wait for Xbox3!"

Call me a total lamo, but i still don't get the point, whats so great
about the xbox. Halo isn't my thing. There are only a few titels i like,
namely HL2, SW:KOTR2. But those titels are also available on the pc.
I am more exited about the new Nintendo & Sony consoles.

well, I'm not going to appear to be trolling, I'm not particularly
looking forward to any new system, it just means more cash and no
guarantee the things will last longer than a year. I think my ps2 has
had the most gameplay, and I don't think we had our gamecube longer
than a few weeks. The xbox gets used but  I'm not into Halo either and
am waiting for Forza. Hopefully that'll be worth having.

The machine is great.

I had the same concern as you, which is why I didn't buy an Xbox right
away.  There are, however, about 4 or 5 titles that were of interest to me
that weren't on the PC or other platform, so that was good enough for
me.

Xbox clearly leads this generation in terms of graphics and sound.  Also,
the Xbox-Live online community makes Xbox the strongest by far with
regards to online play.  (unfortunatly, I don't care about online play...)

XBox also has the best support for HDTV...not that I have an HDTV at this
time.

Even though many of the XBox's games are available on the PC, there is
still something to be said for being able to just come home, flop onto the
couch, pickup the controller, and start playing.  I'm not saying gaming on
a PC is more difficult or involved (I've been gaming on PCs since the days
of DOS5 - believe me, I know how difficult and involved it used to be!)
just that using the XBox is more...convienent.

Unfortunatly, the Xbox's biggest weakness is its library.  If you really
like sports and FPS-type games, then the XBox's library will probably be
enough for you.  But if you want platformers, RPGs, and other non-FPS type
action games then you might find the PS2 more to your liking.

How is it with the visual resolution? I heard that games like, let me say,
doom3 are not as good, as on the pc. I could not verify that, because i
don't have an xbox so far.
Certainly there are 3 games i would like to play, as is SW:KOTR2, HL2 (if
it comes out).
I have to admit, that it makes it really hard at the moment to make a
choice. Because all three system seems to have good games. I really hate
that :(

certain level. Maybe racing, kinda fun.

Well, there's no way Xbox is going to beat a high end PC.  Even your best
HDTV is only going to do 1080i, and I can't even remember the last time I
had to worry about my monitor using interlaced, much less at higher
resolutions.

That said, most XBox games at least support 480p, which will give you a
smoother picture than what your standard TV does at 480i.  XBox also has
more games that will support HD resolutions than either the Game Cube or
Playstation.

I haven't heard if HL2 is coming out for XBox or if it's going to come out
later for Xbox2.  Personally, I'd play it on a PC for the enhanced
graphics, but that's just me.

PS2 is definitely the console for RPGs, though XBox has a few good titles
as well.

As for getting an Xbox, I got mine from Costco.  It came with Kotor1, an
extra controller, and the DVD kit (useless, since I already have a DVD
player.)

I've seen game stores selling used Xboxes for $129.

Microsoft is supposed to unveil XBox2 later this week, so maybe we'll
finally know some actual details about this thing - such as, will it be
backwards compatible with XBox1?  If so, you might want to wait for XBox2,
and just get a PS2 for now.

Well 1080p displays are starting to come out in more configurations.
Will be expensive at first but eventually should become widespread
through all price ranges.

Blue-laser discs will likely have 1080p content.

It's a extremely smart and strategic move to narrow the gap on Sony's user
base and to shut the door on Nintendo.
Now we just have to wait a few years to see if they are successful at it.

Or, in other words, will that make it a Genesis, or a Dreamcast?
Time will tell.

So why buy a new 3.4Ghz Pc with 250Gb hard drive when there is "nothing
wrong" with your 486dx with 20Mb hard drive?
Technology moves on.  Someone people (ME!) havn't bought an x-box and the
new improved version might (it WONT!) persuade me to buy one to play the
latest all colour "omg that is soooooooooo real!" games and put my coppers
in MS's pockets.

i agree with you here...  Not that i own an xbox, but i have played one
here and there. Halo and Halo 2 are absolutely the only two games that
ever interested me on that console. Everything else I liked can be
found on ps2 also, and or first. And even then Halo can be played on
the computer. I think that is what kills microsoft every time. Any game
that is awesome on Xbox, will always come to PC, there is no dividing
line. Xbox is a console cross-over. And until they become hardcore
console only... they will always be second in line to Sony.
