Here's the deal - I'm pretty handy with the old pistola. Around 5
headshots is all that's needed to take a man down.
However, when I use the AR, I might as well spit at my foe!! BUT
others against me have taken me out in a hog or banshee with there AR.
Toe to toe AR fighting with another & I'm toast.
What am I doing wrong?
What's the *secret* to being handy with the assault rifle?
Any advice appreciated.

There are 3 "secrets" IMHO.
1. The AR basically sucks most of the time, doing minimal damage all things
considered.
2. The AR is only really useful at close range
3. A short burst will be the most accurate, after the first 2 or 3 rounds
its accuracy goes to pot.
Find a quiet spot and fire off some bursts while you're carefully watching
the glowing trails, and you'll see what I mean. So firing in short bursts
is the only way to hit things that aren't right in front of your face.
I use the AR only to finish off something I've sofened up with other
weapons, or, if I've managed to get around to the back of a shee at close
range (5-20 feet) then emptying the clip at the prostrated driver is a fast
way to inflict a lot of damage.
I'm no expert but that's what my experience has been.

I don't believe the question has been properly answered. The question
is "What's the secret to being handy with the assault rifle?". The
most simple and accurate answer is to shoot the head. How do you shoot
the head? Aim the cursor at their face from close range, or jump and
shoot down on their head (most effective if you can pull it off). You
should notice that you are killing people with the first clip.
