Paul Catley - 17 Jan 2004 17:59 GMT Most games these days come in standardised packaging. This is true of games for the XBox, PS2, Gamecube and PC, and they usually have a standard logo indicating the format in the top left-hand corner of the front cover. My question is this: who decided what the standard logo would be for PC games?
(Yes, this is the sad kind of thing I spend my time pondering)

BTW, the Far Cry demo (just released) is very sweet, if you have the rig to run it (which I do). Tactial gameplay meets the Isle of Dr Moraeu. Very nice and awfully pretty water and shadows.

Very nice and awfully pretty water and shadows. Looks really purty, but the system requirements are starting to worry me re: HL2.... I've got a 9800 and an XP2200 chip, and I can't get more than single figure frame rates at 1024x768. When combat starts, even 800x600 turns into a slide show... :( Only thing I can think of to boost performance is more memory. Hope that's it...
I'm also hoping the dialogue gets more varied in the full game... the soldiers on the dock at the start have about five conversations maximum, and they repeat them over and over. And the water's the wrong scale.. it feels like a bath rather than the ocean.
Apart from that, I think it's very, very impressive. Driving the jeep is a blast, and the sniper rifle is beautiful. Stealth only seems to get me so far, but there again, nothing says 'great game' like a silenced P90 at close range... :D Body armour seems to actually work, so the old CS 'let the bullet-stream wander up to the head' trick is not only useful, it's damn near essential. Great stuff.

Are you running back down the corridor you came in through, or the new corridor that heads directly away from the fuel tanks (I think it's got a red lighting system, or a glow)? I did it first time, and even though the explosions ran through the gas pipes next to me as I was nearing the end, I still got the cut scene as the explosion burst out of the end of the tunnel.
I've just gone back and tried it again, and so long as you start running as soon as you get a chance, and keep on running, you make it. If you stop in the tunnel, the explosion travels past you, and you die.
Cheers

I didn't even realise there was a sprint button. I just head for the new corridor, and keep the forward key held down. You've got no chance whatsoever of actually getting to the end before the fire catches you - why would they program those pretty gas pipe explosions if you could? :)
However, the only way I can make it kill me is if I stop running. Otherwise the explosion just sort of happens next to me, then I get a cut scene showing the outside, with the explosion bursting out, the radar dish collapsing, and then the 'end of demo sales pitch' screen.
Incidentally, have you noticed the bullet-proof qualities of leaves on this island. Crouching in a bush, with a goon about two feet in front of me, I cut loose with a P90 into his face. Fortunately for him there are two leaves in between us, which not only catch every bullet but also absorb all sound, so he doesn't even hear me. It's obviously what the whole evil experiment is all about - kevlar bushes.

If you do fancy a bit of sneaking, you can swim around the group of soldiers at the next dock along, and then come back behind them. They've got a nice jeep just waiting to take you up the trail....

Was running it at 1024*768 also. With this rig:
System Info: OS (Windows XP Professional, Service Pack 1 (5.1 - 2600) Uptime: 5d 21h 30m 16s Record: 1w 2d 12h 33m 50s) mIRC (Version: 6.12 Uptime: 5d 21h 26m 13s Record: 5d 21h 26m 13s) MEM ([|||-------] Usage: 490/1536mb (31.90%)) CPU (1-AMD , 2166MHz, 256KB (100% Load)) Grafx (NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4200 1280x1024 32bit 100Hz)
I'm not at all worried about Half-life2 because first was very scaleable. When a started playing StarWars Galaxies which requires a bit install I found the upgrade in memory made all the difference.

So, Prince of Persia. Damn fine game. I'm about 70% through at the moment, and loving nearly every minute. The combat is fantastic - you think the odds are overwhelming until you remember the original PoP, and how you had to watch for the enemy attack patterns... and then it clicks :D
The camera is getting worse, though... for god's sake, why didn't they make it like Oni, where if you backed up to a wall it went transparent so you could still see in front of you. Here, if you get into combat in a room with pillars, the camera is extremely unpredictable.
Minor complaint, really - the rest is just a complete blast.
