That's a very nice review. I wanna play it! Love the similie (?) at the end.
I've decided that I'm severely lacking in the 'Games I have played (and
completed)' department. But I did just finish Call of Duty (about 12 hours
non-stop!!).. Not as interactive as BF1942 but definitely more intense! And
the graphics are superb too.. very realistic.
But as usual (or so I've heard..) a very lacklustre and anti-climactic
climax. The multi-player ain't too bad tho. No crossbows :-(   but plenty of
sniper rifles! ;-))

I've heard a lot of good stuff about that. I was put off by the Normandy
section at the beginning which is pretty standard World War fair but
I've been told it gets a lot better.

I've gone and lost myself in another MMORPG, only this time it's a
good one! Final Fantasy XI, great game. Everything I imagined this
MMORPG stuff would be like, in fact.

When I'm not playing, I'm feeling sorry for myself, because I've got
the flu and I'm sick as a dog.

Looks like it's U.S only at the moment however MX2.co.uk seems to be
selling U.S imports for ?40.

Yep, another import copy.

Okay, a couple of things first. Here's the official site,

http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/index.shtml

You don't get too choose your server when you create your character.
The game automatically selects one for you (to avoid some servers
overcrowding). To end up on the same server as a friend, said friend
will have to buy an in-game world pass (basically an invitation) and
send you an access code. You then use this code when you create your
character. Myself and a bunch of others from the GameSpy forums are
all on the Unicorn server (around San D'Oria), so if you're
interested, let me know when you have the game and I'll get a world
pass for you.

The game itself and the PlayOnline interface are insanely polished and
the graphics are gorgeous. The servers are in Japan, I'm in Sweden
(no, not Norway) on a low-end ADSL connection and despite this, the
game is smooth and lag-free. No obvious bugs, shitloads of content, an
actual storyline (that feels like a proper single-player game),
cutscenes, and friendly players.

It's big bugger, though, 5+ gigs, but well worth it.

Yup. Been there already. Although I'll read it a bit more now the game
is on order.

Ok, I'll be back in touch when I get the game.

Yeah the review did mention that. Strange and significant that they
should mention that considering it's not actually part of the game but a
method of connecting to it.

> The servers are in Japan, I'm in Sweden

I wasn't going to say a thing.

Well I was playing SWG on an East-coast American server with little ill
effects which didn't surprise me. However I remember trying to connect
to quite a few Asian servers when playing counter-strike and it was
unplayable. However RPG is often more strategy than reactions and
reflects that to an extent.

I think one of the turning points in me buying it was one of the turning
points in you ending your play of Star Wars Galaxies, namely the lack of
actual 'missions' to go on. I tried to look beyond it naively and only
accepted I was wrong when you quit the game. It's a crafters game
ultimately.

Mind, my mate George plays a crafting class and I think he's getting
sick of it now. I might bring up FFXI with him.

> It's big bugger, though, 5+ gigs, but well worth it.

Well that's hardly a problem is it?
After all I remember being impressed when I first saw a game spread
across two floppy disks on the Amiga or having turn the cassette over on
the spect...

Well maybe not.

Cheers for the mail.

Dunno about the good old days bit tho...can't remember HL on the
Amiga/spect.../c64 et al ;-) I mean what's good about anything that can't
play HL?
But Civilisation was good on the Amiga... first game (of three) I ever
finished! Oh wait..make that four... it's just come flooding back that I
completed Kings's Quest on something or other.

First computer for me. I went from 128 to 48k. Oddly. I had simple
consoles like the Atari before that but Spectrum is where it began. Or
more probably the Amiga.

Yes. But it did have Chaos - Battle Of The Wizards!!1

Superb. I'm currently downloading 4.6gb compressed file of Amiga games.

Oh I was sh.t at Civilization. I couldn't keep my people from rebelling.
Only after did I learn about making entertainers.

In the times of Yore, approximately 3 moons after Wed, 31 Dec 2003 00:58:47 -0000, there was a signal
from the heavens from where the angel "rat" <go@way.com> emblazoned these words across the heavens:

I still have a speccy. It's up in the attic, a zx-81. I tried it out last year, and it still works great,
jetpac and all :)

It left me wondering why they had to go and make joypads so damn confusing :) It also reminded me about
load times tho....

Shouldn't we be acquiring some of those "I remember the good ol' days of..." points for this thread?
