Actually, that made me think of an interesting question, who runs/owns WON ? I guess if it was Sierra/Valve they'd have closed it down and forced people to use Steam?

WON itself is now owned by Flipside (Who i believe bought out a lot of the old online gaming services, such as WON, TEN, Heat, etc etc) , however Valve ultimately control the HL authentication servers, and are going to close them down eventually, but not until Steam is working properly (Ref - steampowered FAQ). So sometime in the not too distant future it will most likely not be possible to play older versions of HL online.

Helpneeded - 15 Dec 2003 02:11 GMT Sry if it's a stupid question, but, have Sierra/Valve set a release date for HL2, after all the palava with the source code getting scoused.

No, there's no release date yet.

Their must be someway to replace/bypass the authentication server's when Valve do shut them down, though i'm guessing that may not be legal or something, plus who would we trust to run the authentication servers...... this is assuming Steam does turn out to be even worse than it is now :o)

Maybe valve will make a patch which makes steam 'immitate' the WON servers or something.. but it seems unlikely.
However, I'm optimistic about steam... I like the ideas behind it, and believe when they finally get it working for *everyone*, it will be better than the old WON system.

You can. The problem is hacked clients can only play on hacked servers, which happen to be full of cheats. I'd rather Steam to that, I'd imagine. I've yet to install steam on my own PC, but playing it on friends PCs I was quite unimpressed.

Somehow I imagine that there won't be any hacked servers which aren't full of cheats either. :)
What were you unimpressed about? bearing in mind that the "offline mode" for steam is still in the production line.

I haven't used the steam in-game thing, I still use All-seeing Eye ... there's a seperate tab in ASE for Steam CS/Steam HL and normal HL... it works fine
