In your guys' opinion, what is the best currently available PC FPS for
multi-player DM type play?  I'm not interested in scripted
single-player modes at all.  I have played Q3A in the past, and am
currently spending the most time with the Unreal Tournament 2003 demo.
I was ready to buy UT2003 (it's now under $20), but decided to hold
off and see what other games are out there.  I have never played Half
Life.  Is it a very good MP game?  It seems (from reading here) that
it is a good single-player game with a good story, but like I said,
that's not what I am looking for.  What other FPS games are out there
that you guys have played.  Which ones are good?  Which ones to avoid?
Money is tight, so I don't want to make the wrong purchase.  I
believe (from reading here) that the HL demo doesn't allow MP, so it
will not do me much good to download that.

Thanks!!!

Seriously, you cannot go wrong with Half Life.. it's available dirt cheap
and yes, it is scripted to a degree but the gameplay is so immersive and
each area unique in it's challenges that you will quickly forget it.

Go on.. you know you want to ;-)

Why not Half-life? Choose original half-life, Choose endless mad
deathmatches (MP free for all's), Choose Counterstrike (MP free download);
Choose pondering over your weapon selection too long... and die.....

No idea what the latest 'budget' pack is, but you should be able to pick up
the original Half-life, and most of the expansions for under 20GBP now (for
the lot), uh and the other free MP games, a dozen or so? and a few dozen
more SP mods?

and best is - you can play em ok using a 56k modem (but remember the
game/gfx engine is five years old - next week:).

Okay, I see you've played Quake3 and if it's a pure hardcore deathmatch
experience your looking for you may well get it with Half-life
deathmatch or one of it's mod's like Action Half-life. That said, there
is no way you'll find the quantity of servers for the aforementioned
games you would expect with Quake3.

Counter-strike is a deathmatch type game and although it is extremely
difficult at times, has the capacity to be exceedingly fast, has periods
of strategy it may not be what you want.

The only other suggestion I could possibly make would be Halo. But Half-
life is by far your cheaper option.

Hell, just but it, it's pennies.

Save all of your money and download the absolutely free Castle Wolfenstein:
Enemy Territory.  You don't even need CW to play the game - it's a
completely free download, and one of the best MP FPS games ever.  Try it
out - you won't be sorry.  :)

MP is good :)

You can pick up the whole Half-Life series for very little now, which
would give you not only a still unsurpassed single-player experience,
but a MP game which still draws tens of thousands of players worldwide.

On top of that, you get Counterstrike, a free team-based mod which you
really do have to play to believe...

Trust us....

Thanks to everyone for the advise.  Looks like I will be picking up a
copy of Half-Life...  and downloading the free Castle Wolfenstein :
Enemy Territory.
(I remember playing the original CW on a Apple II+ way back when.  One
of the 1st games I can remember with digitized sound/speech - as the
Apple II sound capabilities were quite poor).

I guess I should have expected HL to be the suggestions from all, as
this is a Half-Life newsgroup ;)  Then again, reviews of Halo in the
Halo newsgroup and UT2003 in the UT newsgroup still are mixed, so I
take it as a good sign that everyone here seems to be very dedicated
to Half-Life.

Thanks again guys.  (and take it easy on me when we meet in in one of
the MP DM servers... :)

Hehe. Thanks Lyset. It's been a long day and the John Smiths has finally
taken it's toll. What would I do without you? (apart from survive
multiple grenade deaths)

Good luck. I tried to play Quake 2 DM with a 56k modem and I my butt still
hurts. OK I suck (I finished Q3 on I can win and I work on Bring it on)
but lag aggravated my suckiness!

One FPS for DM? Er... Quake 3? Serious Sam?
