I'm finally giving up on newsgroups/usenet - Vaya con Dios

Has nothing to do with AGHL, well except for the fact that this was one
of the last places for decent conversation and it's gone silent.  It
seems that if I try to get involved in a new group, I'm met by a.sholes
at the door.  If I do get through, there is so much crap to wade
through... necessitating so many filters and kill-file entries that I've
just reached the end of my rope.  I've been a part of usenet since
before there was a web and I thought it would always have some value.
There's always been spam, kooks, and jerks, but there used to be some
tasty goodness inside.  Finding that has become too difficult and less
worthwhile.  I'm deleting my usenet accounts, I may look in on things
from google groups but i certainly won't be posting again.

That's a damn shame Steve.  Too many decent posters moving over to make
more room for idiots.  Say hello sometimes... maybe through Steam
friends... that's how Stri does it.

Given how long Usenet has been around I always thought it'd be one of
those things which would last the duration, but I have to agree with you
that the signal/noise ratio on the vast majority of NGs has fallen
dramatically over the last few years, making many of them simply not
worth reading.

Still, I'm hoping that this group will pick up again sometime - I guess
silence is better than being full of spam from idiots :)

Agreed. Sorry to see LymanAlpha go, especially since these days it
can't take long to check the aghl newsgroup for signal - not much noise
to hide it these days.

I think he's right that other forms of contact have sidelined usenet,
but there's still a place for this 'one to many, non time-critical'
communications paradigm, not least for the opportunities it offers for
verbose pomposity ;)

I like the slow drip of human contacts it provides, like an ultra-slow
Twitter, without the pressure to respond instantly or be left behind.
It's certainly no problem to have Thoth auto-start every day, and the
ten seconds it takes to scan for intelligent life is hardly an onerous
task.

I'll be around until all these moments are lost in time...

And since I just paid for another year of cis.dfn.de, I guess I'll still
be here too!
