That way when you click a tinyurl, you get a chance to see the full url before being taken to it.

But aside from that, its easy to see how noone could have possibly predicted what was to follow in the year ahead of its release - it'd have been hard to imagine that so many mod makers would suddenly ditch Quake 2 in favour of HL (two in particular, which likely sold more copies of the game than the game itself).

It's strange because it just didn't call to me either. It wasn't until I tried the demo some time after release of the game that I was immediately sold and was trying to get a copy the next day. It was the part in the demo when you first met the soldiers and how scarey it was how good the AI was. Fantastic, heart-thumping realisation of good fighting against them would be.
Even now that was one of my best gaming moments.

Does seem that way doesn't it CF? :) Hard to believe it's nearly a decade now... the joys of trying to tune a 56k modem to give me the best possible ping when playing across the atlantic. Now I have ADSL it's much faster (when it works :)
See how many names you recognize, this was after the 'Bashes' had been going at least a year if not more I think. Most links are long dead, but a least one CS bash report and a deathmatch report still have screenshots and comments, Nov 2000 vintage. (4th, 5th and 6th ones seem to work, TFC, CS and DM).

First one we held I had a dial up and the server was somewhere across the pond, my ping was something like 800 or so... The only person I was able to kill was HQH who lived in Virginia if my memory serves me right...... Wish I hadn't deleted all my maps and models... Have an extra box that would make a good dedicated server... Don't think we could get enough players to make it worth while... That was dialup across the pond. I got wireless in 2005 and now actually have DSL hookup to the same house. I had to drop the Phat_Pinger and just go as Phat_Jethro as it doesn't apply anymore.
It's a good thing as my skill has decreased with age my pings need to be better to compensate. :-)

However then BT went with Giganews and now I no longer pay anyone else and retention is brilliant. The CDKey generator apperared on the internet for the first time early 2001, according to the wayback machine: http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.reality-syndicate.com/syndicatepress/hlc dkey.htm
Quoting most of the page: "You can use this page over and over to find as many (invalid) CD Keys for Half Life as you want. Here's a brief statement on how this amazing device works! We all know that HL CD keys are composed of strings of numbers (0-9) and letters (A-Z). However, we DON'T know how long the key is supposed to be. Let's assume the key is as long or shorter than 25 characters. Now, we here at the Reality Syndicate have created a random generator using JavaScript. Here's a breakdown of the number of possible CD Keys for the length of the string, assuming the key can be made of numbers 0-9 and letters AZ:"
"Now, since you probably don't know the exact length of what a CD Key is supposed to be, lets go ahead and add all of these numbers up, since you'll have to try all lengths, probably. Our total is: 831.375 duodecillion, or: 831,375,028,249,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 possibilities. "Hypothetically, if you decided to try all of these possibilities, and you were able to attempt one every second, non stop, until you were finished, it would take you 26,362,728,310,500,000,000,000,000,000,000, or 26.3 nonillion years. Scientists now believe the Earth to be about 4 billion years old, and the universe itself about 20 billion years old. If the universe is actually 20 billion years old and it were to end and begin again right now, and each new universe lasting for 20 billion years, it would take you 13,118,136,415,530,000,000,000 or 13 sextillion universes to finish. Better put on a pot of coffee! Enjoy attempting to play pirated Half Life. "
