The Havoc Physics Engine is used to great effect in this game and provides a
taste of what will be coming with Half-Life 2. Getting into a "Bullet Time"
firefight with multiple baddies in a room full of breakable and movable
object is a sight to behold.

It is a little something to hold us over until HL2 comes out.

True, true. It is very good indeed. A bit too similar to the first one
and way too short to warrant full price, though.

IMO.

I was not bothered too much by the length, probably due to the intesity of
the gaming experiance. I also guestimate that it takes me around 14-16 hours
in total to get through. But then, i look around, plan attacks, let my
bullet time recharge, etc., so I may take longer that is typical.

The people that are claiming to cruise through it in four hours remind me of
the old "par" times in Doom -- where you simply run as fast as you can
through the whole level. I never ever got close to par!

I also got the game on sale at Fry's for $33.95 or so. My advice to anyone
wht buys games is to look for a sale. NEVER pay full price, if you can help
it.

A friend of mine finished it in just over 6 hours, but he does
admittedly have mad skillz.

I think it will take longer than that before HL2 is released...  ;)

I just finished it again myself. Oh, and yes, Xen is annoying. Mind the
baby was a lot easier than I remember.

Took my about a week, about 6 sittings of about 3 hours I'd guess.

Yeah, I don't even know why anyone would play a game like that.  I have a
buddy who just whizzes through levels as fast as he can, completely
reactionary.  He's good at it, but it's really the "deathmatch style" of
play.  Then he complains the game is too short.  ;)

I think when you're playing a single-player experience, you should take your
time and explore.  There's no hurry, and you don't get points for speed.
There's a lot to be said for being cautious in any FPS game, because it's
the best way to preserve your health and armor.  It's a totally different
style than multi-player, where preserving your health isn't as important
(and is generally a futile exercise anyway).

Sounds like the Quake Done Quick video I saw way back when.
Quake2 Start to finish... 12 minutes.

When you've played a game several times, why not try to get through it as
fast as you can? Adds a new challenge to it when you know it all the way
through. To me, it's on par with a crowbar run. You should try it sometime.

True, and I can't say I haven't gone back to an old game and "ran" through
it.  I guess I didn't realize that was an actual activity people do (see
Quake Done Quick link in other response).  Cool.  :)

Does MP2 have a first person view? If not, I'll pass.

You *did* play MP1, didn't you? 3rd person view is the whole point of
the experience.

Well I agree. Mind, 3rd person is going through some what of a
renaissance at the minute what with Max Payne and Jedi Knight, no harm
in giving the user an opinion I guess...

SNIP

The irony here is that I skipped Max Payne when it first came out because I
didn't want to play a game that wasn't viewed in first-person perspective.
Now I may have to find a cheap copy to get all the back-story for Max Payne
2.

I guess it was light saber battling in Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy that
convinced me to try an over-the-shoulder viewpoint. For Max Payne 2 you just
can't appreciate the coolness of bullet time and the Havoc physics engine
unless you can see it from third person. Doing a shootout and speed reload
in a room full of bad guys and breakable/movable objects is simply like
being in an action movie.

Well Max Payne is a good game in it's own right and well worth a few
quid but you needn't buy it for the back story, Maxy Payne 2 stands up
on it's own.

Some friends of mine (who are big tarts) and don't play fps used to sit
and watch me play half-life whilst doing whatever they were doing at
LAN's if the LAN options used to break down.

They used to say how much it was like watching a movie. And that was 3-4
years ago.

Nope.... but you can play as a nude (and very fit) Mona.  Nice.  Shawk.
