Unable to start Steam?

I got myself a problem with Steam :(

I am not autostarting Steam when the OS boots but starting it manually when
needed

Now whenever I try to start Steam it tries to autoupdate and then exits with
an error claiming that Steam is already running and one copy can be started
at the same time or something

I am running Vista if this has something to do with the problem
Anyone heard about this?

Thanks/Peter

I don't know much about Vista but can you ctrl alt del and scan the
task list to make sure it isn't running before hand?

Without any helpful suggestions I'd say that uninstall the Steam
Client (but keep the game content) and re-install Steam. If it won't
let you because it says it is running then start Vista in safe mode?

I'm sure someone else will have a better solution!
