Prey won't load... help!

I've tried the 3drealms Prey forum without response.  Perhaps
someone here can help me.

I bought Prey from Steam on that irresistible $5 deal.  But I
can't even get to a splash screen.  On my Q6600, I get that
"preparing to load Prey" message, that goes away, and then
nothing.  If I now open up task manager, I note that Prey is
using about 18MB of RAM, and 24-27% of CPU.

I'm running:
Win XP Pro x64 edition
Intel Q6600
2GB RAM
8800GT graphics with 169.21 drivers

I've tried running in XP, Win2000, even Win98 compatibility mode.
I've tried setting it to run in a window, as suggested in one old
forum post (command line parameter).
I've tried setting it to 640x480 in the program properties.
I've disabled the firewall.
I've deleted local content and reinstalled.

No joy -- I never see any kind of splash screen, it just sits there
at about 15% CPU and 18 or 8MB RAM (depending on whether I launch
through Steam or from the prey.exe icon).

Any other ideas?

Try allowing it in your firewall, it connects to the net every time you run
it, perhaps that is what is preventing it running?

Long shot but did you get the 64 bit drivers vs 32 bit for the
8800GT?
Also: Required Os>Microsoft Windows XP SP2 or later, Microsoft
Windows 2000 SP4 or later.

Thanks for suggestions; Carl, I've tried letting it through firewall
both ways, and disabling firewall, no joy.

Legion, I was pretty sure I had the right driver.  Just confirmed.

Oh, well... it plays on my laptop, but that's not near as much fun.
