Nowhere in my posts did I attempt to knock David so if that is how it
came across then my apologies to him. I think if he takes to his FPS
games like he seems to be he'll soon be head-shotting everything in
sight and looking for more challenges...

?! I didn't intend to imply that if that's what you read... in the same
way that beginners don't go skiing black pistes, I didn't find HL2 on
hard to be easy (so *I* wouldn't say it's easy). I wasn't suggesting you
were being condescending... some people play more FPS's than others!

Written comms are always susceptible to the moods of the reader
unfortunately... I was taking a rest from deciding whether to throw up
into a bucket or sit on it when I read that post :-)

Ah, the memories...
Fine games, indeed.
Actually, I "cheated" in System Shock II. I found a tip (tho' it was
probably common knowledge amongst the more savvy gaming ranks) to edit
one of the config files to minimize enemy respawning.
That's always been a minor pet peeve of mine, but it was particularly
annoying to me in SS II, for some reason I probably couldn't even
explain if I tried.
IIRC, you could also dial back another SS II annoyance: the damnable
weapons degradation which caused your guns to wear out and break after a
while. Wasn't thrilled with that particular gameplay dynamic, either.
After all, if I wanted to do maintenance I'd turn the damn game off and
go do my laundry, or wash the kitchen floor, or something, no?

The Configuration File... (SS2)
Create a notepad document called "user.cfg". All the configuration
variables listed in the readme should be added to the user.cfg (unless
otherwise noted) exactly as written, each on a line of its own.
Monster Spawning
If you've killed everything in a given area, and you wait around long
enough, you'll notice that more monsters are spawned to keep you busy.
To minimize respawning, use the configuration variable:
no_spawn
Gun degradation
The config variable:
gun_degrade_rate <n>
is a multiplier for the rate at which your weapons degrade. For
example, to completely eliminate weapon degradation & breakage, set
the value to 0. To tone it down, set it somewhere between 1 and 0.
