I have a T7700 with 8600M GT gfx (laptop) - a Dell Vostro 170 btw
I don't think you should consider anything less than the 8600M GT (or GS
probably)

I probably go for the Orange Box when I get my big fat bonus for all the
late hours away from home last year

If you can play E1, you can play Portal. It's the same game engine.
It even runs in Linux under Wine just fine. That being said, on your
next computer, don't go to a big box store. Go to your local
independent neighborhood computer store. You could have gotten a far
better machine for your money with better support from your
neighborhood entrepreneur than from any of the big guys.
