Hey all,
I feel like I wasted quite a bit of ammo on these littler buggers.
Then I remembered the first encounter where the NPC uses a pipe to
defeat them. I'm playing on the default difficulty, so I'm not sure
if ammo can be spared for them or not, or if the difficulty level
determines how much ammo you find.
Seems clear from what little I've read that the enemies get tougher,
but do you also find less items?

Personally I prefer the crowbar, at least until the gravity gun becomes an
option.

Definitely - they seem designed for maximum crowbar pwnage :)
Even after you get the gravity gun, there are still instances where
it's not only easier but more satisfying to just whack the hell out of
them.

Get your back to a wall so that they can't get behind you. Switch to
crowbar, and swing for the fences.

Crowbar is the weapon of choice for many of the enemies you come across who
do not have firearms.

But not all :p

I thought "not all" was implicit with the word "many"... ;o)
It's sometimes surprising - headcrabs are arguably the weakest of your
unarmed foes, but you're unlikely to take out a group of two or more using
the crowbar without suffering some small damage. The antlion guard, however,
can easily be taken out using a crowbar without taking any damage, if you
have the patience - except in one of the rooms where you meet him - not
enough space to dash out of the way. Oddly enough, this is also the one
location where you're probably running low on ammo and could do with
conserving it by using the crowbar.

The gravity gun works best for manhacks. Just grab it and fling it at
any hard surface, boom.

... espcially if the hard surface is another manhack....
