First time noob player has some questions!

David Simmons - 11 Feb 2008 06:43 GMT Hey all,
Why am I a first time player? Well, I didn't have a PC that could run HL2 until this Xmas. I'd heard nothing but lobster-bib quality drool about the game, so I was quite excited to find it at Circuit City tonight for only $10!!
However, as much I was mouthing "OMG" during the opening and the first two zones, now I'm wondering if I'll be very glad I'm only out ten bucks.
First question:
When does the constant f.cking firefight stop?!!
I just started Kanal Zone Part 1 and already I feel like I'm on Omaha Beach! Ok, I get the whole military occupation, but I sincerely hope that the entire game is not fraught with this frenetic and frantic assault of chaos and ricochets all the way through! I specifically avoided purchasing Doom 3 because so many people stated how nerve- wracking it was.
I've had my fill of first-person shooters. I loved the original Half- Life because the bulk of the gameplay was based on exploration and problem solving, NOT John Woo-style bullet ballets.
Second question:
Do the CP's constantly replenish, or do I have a hope of "cleaning" an area permanently?
The breadth of the visual landscape begs for closer inspection, yet the gameplay seems hellbound on driving the player into the darkest corners, only to peek for a quick glimpse. The world that has been created is incredible to look at, so please assure me that I'll have the opportunity to do so without ducking a constant rain of lead!
I've gone to (http://www.visualwalkthroughs.com/halflife2/ halflife2walkthrough.htm) for help so far, but don't want to spoil the discovery.
Final question:
Any basic tips (other than creep & save!) for making my way without constant running & dodging?
I know I've touched the tip of the iceberg, but I really want to know what I'm in for so that I can soldier on knowing that more intricate situations will arise!
Thanks in advance for your help!

It has its moments of stealth and problem solving, but it tends to be a lot of shooting (uh yeah - it's a first-person-shooter) and crap-your-pants frights.
You probably wasted your money. If you're wussing about it now, you'll hate Ravenholme.

> The breadth of the visual landscape begs for closer inspection You'll be disappointed. HL2 gives a very good feel of size and scope, but each area is just a cleverly designed linear route.

Seriously, my initial post was spiced by a little liquid intoxication, but your response reeks of someone who deeply desires to stake the higher ground while those who scramble earnestly upward for the first time are tossed little curds of *hit from the blessed mountaintop.
> You'll be disappointed. HL2 gives a very good feel of size and scope, but > each area is just a cleverly designed linear route. So, do you hate the game or just me? Time to confess, brother!!

If you don't like the response, don't post when drunk. :o)

If you want open ended gameplay you need something like GTA. If you want the "feel" of HL2 with a genuinely explorable area (as opposed to the linear path of HL2 and Doom3) I think STALKER is an open environment.
David Simmons - 12 Feb 2008 06:29 GMT > If you don't like the response, don't post when drunk. :o) You know, you're absolutely right. It was a dumb thing to do. I regret it and my snarky reply. Please accept my apologies!
What's GTA?

:o) No problem. I don't often get upset with stuff I see on usenet, even if it's deliberate. Even with well-intentioned messages, there's no "tone of voice" or "body language" so the only cues to meaning that you get are the words themselves. In direct communication, that's more than 80% of the message, so it's no surprise flame wars start. Often, it's the mood of the RECIPIENT that determines the message being received!
> What's GTA? Grand Theft Auto. GTA3, GTA Vice City and GTA San Andreas are large, freely navigable environments. I haven't tried STALKER but it seems to be free roaming, but with more of a HL2 vibe to it....

Ahhh, but they do in Ravenholm. Try walking around the block a few times, killing everything you see.

Even if the routes are linear, the wide variety of methods by which you fight your way from A to B is the real draw of the game. The game is packed full of interesting ways to use the environment to help you in your fight against Combine/Aliens/etc. Some are obviously intended, where others are far more subtle. In some cases, they appear to be completely unintentional by the designers, but picked up by people who dared to explore, or try something different on their second time through.

David Simmons - 11 Feb 2008 16:47 GMT or just Ravenholme? I want to know in advance so I'll be better prepared mentally for the onslaught!

It never thought there were too many people coming at me in my time playing HL2...
Just remember that if they keep coming for you it isn't always the best idea to stay in one place util you've killed them all as sometimes it just won't happen...
Civilian_Target - 12 Feb 2008 19:26 GMT > It never thought there were too many people coming at me in my time > playing HL2... I cracked it open on difficult on the first go, it took me fricking ages, and it felt like it was never going to stop coming. In many areas I was out of ammo and just had to run. I think in many areas, early and later in the game there are infinite enemies, you won't get time to explore the landscape, and if you do, you'll be disappointed that its so linear. My advice is don't be afraid and run like Forrest Gump!

Do the fast zombies that start coming for you when you first meet Father Grigori for real (instead of his continual popping up at random windows, spouting bollocks) spawn indefinitely?
I remember a part of HL1 quite early on, where you went down a shaft platform - and a continual stream of headcrabs came out of the ducts above. I might reload it tonight and see if that was never-ending - it certainly seemed so...

If you mean in the cemetery at the very end of Ravenholme then I think yes...If you manage to actually kill them all then the effect of Father Greg fighting 'til his death wouldn't have been pulled off...I did get the impression he would die soon after...did anyone else?

Can't remember but you may be correct. Ep2 (I think) had infinite spawn zones for the ant lions until you covered the holes with cars...
Steve Harder-Kucera - 11 Feb 2008 18:34 GMT > First question: > > When does the constant f.cking firefight stop?!! The good news is that the constant firefight towards the end of Route Kanal.
The bad news is that is replaced by other kinds of attacks. Many nasty monsters with no guns. Followed by an air boat that may take a while to master, combined with more constant firefight.
Ben Cottrell - 11 Feb 2008 22:12 GMT Maybe a little discretion here, for the benefit of our first-timer, we don't want too many spoilers floating around :)

I don't consider them spoilers as learning how they work within the context of the game is the challenge.
Thanks for the concern though!
