Wretched Wretched Steam!

Finally FINALLY I can play HL2 Ep1 and I am stuck in the core - don't know
what I'm supposed to do here and the elevator doesn't go back up.  After a
WEEK of messing around with Steam and I'm stuck on what is probably some
easy job.

So what's the easy job?

I finally found a spot on Steam that has the explanation of the process of
loading Steam and the games in the Orange Box.  After all this time I
finally got the games loaded from the DVD and Steam still thinks I want Team
Fortress instead of HL2 Ep2.  Imagination me playing Team Fortress at 24k!

Do you need help shutting down the core?  Are you down in a sub room
with three conduits that you need to re-energize?  There's a hole in the
ceiling somewhere that you can grab energy spheres through and
re-energize the conduits.  Wait to put the last one in on the left.
Hold onto a sphere with the gravity gun and back up onto the elevator.
Shoot the sphere at the left conduit and the elevator will go up.

Yes thank you, I finally got that figured out and now I am in the dark with
a zillion zombines that blow up while I'm waiting for the elevator.  I
switched to easy and there are still a zillion.  I really hope the rest of
the games aren't like this, I don't like this kind very much.  I found
Bioshock to be like this in a way:  the bad guys showed up suddenly and
frantically, there was no finesse or thought to getting rid of them, just
blind slashing out.  Of course, in Bioshock, I was busy watching the fish
swimming around.

That's a pretty tough challenge. You will see a bunch of flares and gas
barrels near the elevator. Gather those up where you can get to them (keep
the barrels spread out a bit so one fire doesn't set them all off). Locate
the power switch on the level and after activating power get back to the
elevator as quickly as possible. Stay in the area of the elevator for the
duration of the fight, use the flares to keep the place lit and kill the
advancing bad guys by throwing gas barrels at them. Use the flaming bad
guys as light also. Position yourself to enter the elevator as soon as it
is available.

Al of the HL games have some pretty heavy challenges. It makes for a high
replay value. I played HL1 yesterday and the Interloper level was even
harder than I remember.
