Attention - All members of the AGHL Royal Court, humble servants of
exiled King Smooth I

Tommorow night will see host to the start of those fabled 'Greatest
battles on earth';  A mythical time, the release of TF2, has fallen upon
us, and now, Sunday 09 December 2007, at 9PM GMT, great warriors shall
pick up their arms and engage once more in explosive, flag-capping, mayhem!

Blades sharpened, grenades primed, miniguns spinning, wrenches
tightened, syringes poised, sights aimed, rockets ignited, shooters
loaded, and torches burning - cry havok and let loose the dogs of war!

In traditional AGHL bash style, ad-hoc discussions on the exact
destination are yet-to-be-determined until 10 minutes before the event,
but it will be a public server, somewhere, probably in the UK or nearby
european country.   Feel free to add my SteamID to your Steam Friends
list, to find the game server info; for anyone who I haven't got on my
list already my SteamID is my e-mail address as shown on the NG:
bench@bench333.screaming.net
Name: Bench[AGHL]

On my account page, you ought to be able to find other AGHL'ers past and
present, Most of whom I do hope will join in too.   I'm expecting to see
HighVis, Paul, Sloth, Lyset, and possibly Anders; I also hope the IRC
Lurkers will catch up with us too (Sabaki, Capt, Agra, show your faces!)

This is an open invitation to anyone who may be reading - feel free to
join in, and bring friends, family, pets...   For those who have never
joined in an AGHL bash before, there's just one rule - Have Fun!

I also encourage anyone to make themselves known by adding the utterly
non-exclusive [AGHL] tag to the end of their name (Which stands for
alt.games.half-life, as if you hadn't guessed that yet already!)

It ought to be an absolute blast!   Anyone who feels up-for-it, I hope I
 see you there! :-D

I am really bad at tfc, tfc 2 etc....so will try and be there to prove it :P
Carl - 09 Dec 2007 02:12 GMT
Would you mind if I were to join in? I am also atrocious at TF2!
Carl - 09 Dec 2007 02:19 GMT
Why not start an AGHL group on steam?
Ben Cottrell - 09 Dec 2007 13:09 GMT

Absolutely - The more the merrier :-)   'skillz' have never been a
requirement in the bashes, ao I'm sure you'll fit in just fine ;)

[Appended reply to another post]

> Why not start an AGHL group on steam?

Uh...  Good idea.. :-)

Actually, I'd not even bothered to look at the Steam groups feature
before - it looks like a really neat way of getting something like this
organised..  Certainly better than the way we did things "in days of
old", when the first half hour was spent with us trying to get a
multi-way ICQ chat working ;)

Very nice, Ben :D
I expect to be there, wearing the old tag (remember when they used to ask us
"what clan is [AGHL]?).

I've been playing a few games of 2Fort lately, but I'm sure I used to be better
at it.  Nevertheless, being rubbish is entirely in the spirit of AGHL bashes,
and I expect at least one round of crowbar-only combat ;)  (or the modern
equivalent)

I'm impressed that you recall the quote, it's in my sig below.  If Cyrus turned
up, I'd be amazed but very happy.  He invented TFC bashes, doncha know ;-D

Uh, I think the scout uses a baseball bat these days ;)   I've no doubt
we'll manage to fit some melee combat into the mix :)

Aha!  I spent at least 20 minutes trawling google groups for that last
night!   I typed in every single combination of your name, Cyrus, TF2,
that I could think of, but the damn thing either came up with
lebenty-zillion irrelevent hits, or none at all!     Shame we can't
track him down for the event, but lets hope the prophecy is true :-)

Just to update everyone on the how-to-find-us front - I took up Carl on
his excellent idea of creating a Steam group, to (hopefully) make life
easier for everybody :-)

Still feel free to add me to your contacts list, but, if you prefer,
Check out the AGHL steam community group instead  (Or do both..!) .

Name: alt.games.half-life "The Monkey Pen"
URL: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/aghl
Abbreviation: aghl

With any luck, the Steam group will be able to act as the information
hub tonight (Especially if we manage to stumble across a bad server, and
need to relocate elsewhere)

Ahhh...hold on...I don't know if it is just me but *most* servers that
I try say "server not responding" as soon as I click. So I may not be
able to join....

I don't think that message is just you, I see it alot when I click to
view a game from the Steam server browser.    Personally, I find that I
get better results with it when I try the server browser from within the
game.    I think if the game is already loaded and someone on your list
is in a game, you can use Shift+Tab to bring up your contact list, to
join them (or is it Ctrl+Tab? )

I'm not sure why it would make any difference, but its worth trying!

For all who are attending tonight, we have found Wireplay Server 6

The server is a little slow to load (2 minutes or so), But, Hopefully,
will be lag-free

You're welcome...

I just wished that all of us from this group had the AGHL prefix (or
is that postfix?) at the end of our IDs as I really wanted to know who
I was shooting at :op.....

You can add it no bother, just edit your profile in the steam settings. I
look forward to the next bash, although I buggered off real early to watch
Top Gear, sorry. But there's no Top Gear next week! Go on Ben, schedule
another bash! I would like a blast at vanilla Team Fortress.

Sorry I could only play a few mins - had to go to a WoW guild run.
Hope to attend for longer in future

Apologies for not having [AGHL] after my name, I forgot how to go
about adding it :)

What little time I spent there was great. Unfortunately I suffered the
double whammy of having unexpected company arrive and my pc deciding to
shut down every ten minutes.
I'll be there next week.
Kudos for arranging it Ben.

Missed the bash for the same reason though... ;-(

Happy birthday! :-)

Other than the short notice (Sorry about that), how does the timing of
the bash work for everyone?   If we were to set a date, say for the same
time next Sunday, giving a few more days notice than before, is 9pm a
reasonable start time?  or is it too late for a worknight?

I picked 9pm this week, knowing that one or two people would have been
unable to be there any earlier.

Next sunday (16th) is probably going to be the last opportunity we get
before everyone has family & holiday commitments going on for xmas/new
year/etc, and I just don't think I can wait til january for the next one!

Comments/ideas/suggestions/flames welcome - and with any luck, we'll
manage an even better turnout for next time :D

If you're talking GMT and if the bash lasts around an hour or so then it
sounds ideal to me personally.

Not having even tried the damn game yet I'd like to get it in before the
New Year so if I suck very, very badly at least I'll be able to start
the 2008 afresh with the attitude 'this year'll be better'

PS... any tips or tip-sites for a newb?

Going by yesterday's session (Yes, that time is in GMT), most people
stayed til around 10:30 or 11, though, if you need to break off earlier
than that, then no problem.

Well, you've got a week to gather your skillz together ;)

> PS... any tips or tip-sites for a newb?

Yes..  Don't follow Sloth around the map under the false impression that
he knows where he is, or where he's going ;)

Actually, the game itself lets you in on some handy tips as you let the
levels load - such as holding down Alt-fire as a heavy, to spin-up the
minigun.

Also, if you're going to press 'G' (try it!), don't do it in the middle
of a gunfight :)

Does it have "bots" so you can run around the maps getting used to things
without having to worry about the troublesome experts zapping you every five
seconds after spawning?

That's the main reason I never bothered with TFC - no way to learn the maps
except alone, which seemed a bit pointless.

Not sure but just get in and hit the ground running.
When in doubt use the voice comms and ask what class is needed then just
run around and shoot stuff.

No, just a normal public server, full of the 'experts zapping me'. Took
me a good half hour to figure out what the hell was going on, getting
more used to it now, although i've only been on the dustbowl map. How
many official maps are there?

Naptime for her is computer time for me. Can try and round up some more

I've been a TF2 - Dustbowl hog since the beta was release so I'm good to go.
Unlike previous TFC text typing, verbal communication is the key to
winning the rounds.
