What's "dailup"?  Some new mod for Half-Life?

What supports no use?

Yep, indeed.  Just trying to do what little I can to keep under-educated
bozos from bastardizing the English language any more than it already
is.  Probably wasted effort on my part, but at least I try.

I honestly wonder how some folks make it through life, sometimes, or at
least how they're not embarrassed to speak/write in a public forum the way
they do.

Yesterday morning on one of the breakfast shows here in Australia
they were interviewing a father and son who are suing the kid's
school because he was in grade 7, or something like that, and
was 5 years behind the other kids.  Couldn't read/write properly
etc.

Father blamed the schools, but surely if he took enough
notice/care about his kids he should have known?  OTOH how did he
keep getting put up a grade if he was so bad?

One thing you might consider... it's an International public forum.  Is
'Lost it' a native English speaker or is it their second (or third)
language?  Maybe, maybe not.

It's also possible he or she is dyslexic.

I don't think so.  AFAIK, dyslexia causes a person to sometimes swap a
letter or two around by mistake, but not to completely ignore
capitalization and punctuation.

I think you should just quit pondering the musing's of a 52 year old virgin.

I understand that, but not bothering with (any) capitalization or
punctuation goes beyond that.  Faulty grammar can perhaps be a result of
non-native English ability, but not using all lower case letters and no
punctuation.

That is slow but I can't see why it should not work.
Does the install start at all?
Does your isp have a session time limit?
Do you have a shitty, slow modem?
I don't know how big steam is, but a dialup may take a long time to get megs
and megs.

Are you having trouble downloading a game or downloading the Steam
program itself? While I wouldn't find it out that you were having
trouble downloading a game, as the games are rather large for a 56k
connection, the Steam program (SteamInstall.msi) is only 1,49MB, so you
shouldn't have a problem downloading it.

I can get the steam installer.
I have half life 1 with team fortress on cd brought it new some time
ago,but i cant play the game untill steam updates i'v tryed two computers
with windows xp sp2.
The steam client from the cd rom and the downloaded one does the same
thing it will update too 28% or 33% and then restart at 28% after about
three times it will close I deleted the ClientRegistry.blob it's the only
thing steam support has come up with I ask my isp if they were blocking
any thing I'v even tryed with my firewall and antivirus turned off when i
reboot with no connection I get a steam exception error but when i connect
to the net it starts updateing and restarting.
Any suggestions?
Thx

Use punctuation. Ugh, I'm not fighting with anyone's shitty grammar.

How bad is it?

When HL2 came out I used to be on dialup and it would work but had to
give it lots of time to get updates.
If it's a first time install and you are trying to get all the updates
it would take about a month to download it all. :-(

What I have done is find a buddy with all the files downloaded and updated.
- Install your steam and add you game keys
- Shut it off and copy the every large *.GCF from an updated PC
- delete your clientregistry.blob file
- restart steam and let it update online

I'm afraid it won't simply play as it comes on the CD (DVD actually).  Steam
downloads a considerable volume of data in order to unlock the version of HL2 on
the DVD, which is unplayable without it.  It isn't merely patches, but since you
will have to go online to do this, I believe it will recognise that your retail
version is out of date and won't play until you also patch it up to date.  It
was the first single-player game to require this kind of online registration and
file-unlocking.

I too was on dialup at the time HL2 was released.  ISDN, so pretty fast as
dialup goes, but it still took me two whole nights to unencrypt the game... and
then it was corrupted, so I had to do it again.  I was not very happy.  I'd
suggest (though it didn't say it on the box) that a broadband connection is
required for HL2.  If you can't get that, Jethro's advice is the way to go.

I'm sure there is a way of doing this and avoiding the patches.  Rob
tested it in csipga so I'm x-posting in case he's around, sees this and
can help...

It didn't take me very long to decrypt HL2 using a 56k modem
(relatively speaking of course).

Unfortunately Steam has automatic updates for its games turned on by
default. If a person doesn't realise that then Steam will decrypt the
files for HL2 and download all updates as well.

Right click on the entry for HL2 in the games list in Steam and then
select "Properties". From there on it's obvious what to do next. Do
that as soon as possible and updates will stop.

Here is a link to a screen capture I took at the time when we were
discussing the difference between fact and FUD when it comes to Steam.

I tried to do that in WoW (my next fav game besides HL2);it didn't work...
(I saved all updater-files on a dvd, but the game presumably wants to
download them by itself). I did that, when I bought a new computer. It was
1.1 GB download, about an afternoon on a 1 Mb DSL connection....

Unfortunately your 1mb connection seems to be showing you 6months old
posts... :-)

Yeah, but now I got a new computer, and the Orange box, my previous machine
was too crappy to run anything but half life 1 and HL2 with very throttled
resolution.... And now I thought that there might be a newsgroup dedicated
to HL....

There is (AGHL) and you've found it.  Welcome!  Lots of Valve game
players in csipga too.
