HD Space Optimization...

Hi all,

I play Counter Strike: Source and, as I believe most of you, the
Steam
directory keeps growing larger and larger (over 10 GBs now...). The
problem is that some maps download almost thru the end and then they
interrupt because "something" is missing (generally, a map...). So, I
believe I have a lot of broken/incomplete maps.

Plus, I have downloaded/played some maps I didn't like and I believe
they are taking up space, too...

Is there a way to selectively delete these maps? If not, what files
can I safely delete to regain space, even if that means having to
reload all the maps?

Thank you in advance for any help u may provide...

Ciao, Lupo

Can't help but my Valve folder is 23.5GB and growing.  With the price of
hard drives nowadays wouldn't it be better to spring for a new one?
Even the poorest 14yr old round here could pick up one for the price of
their weekly fags.

You can delete the counter-strike:source\cstrike\maps folder, and
that'll remove all downloaded maps (the stock maps are bundled inside
the .GCF file)

In fact, everything thats outside the .GCF file is deletable without
breaking your game.  (Although if you delete the entire
counter-strike:source folder you'll lose all your settings, aliases,
binds, models, etc)

Hi all, thank you for your replies...

Ben: the GCF files are quite huge, about 6GB, while the maps folder is
about 3GB. I'll try your solution. But, exactly, technically, what are
"STOCK" maps. The GCF files also keep growing...

Shawk: FAGS? Is that Australian/British (Cigarettes) or American
(Homosexuals)?!?!? :-))) I don't have a space problem yet, it's just
that I try to keep my HD as lean as possible...

TBH, in this neck of the woods either would probably fit...

I'm in the UK.

By 'stock' maps I mean the official maps which come bundled with the
game from Valve :)

There's not a great deal you can do about the .GCF files.  Yep, they
seem to grow whenever there's an update released, but they store
_everything_ which the games need to run
(My .GCF files all together account for about 15GB, but that covers CS:S
HL, HL2, Portal, TF2, TFC, DoD:S, CS... )

GREAT! I just erased the maps directory contents, regained about 3GB
and everything works like a charm! THX! I don't mind waiting for the
maps to download again, but I can't stand useless files...

One other thing: when I "Find Servers", with all the filters on (no
pass, not full, humans playing), I get about 250/300 servers.. Is this
a good number of servers? Can I do anything to get more?

Thank you very much for all the help u r giving me...

You could disable the filters, that's one way to get more :)

But presumably you enabled the filters for a reason, and I think 250-300
is more than enough to be able to find a game.   Remember that the more
servers you're refreshing, the longer it takes to fill your list up.

Of course! :-))) Needless to say, I enabled all the filters because I
don't the passwords for the protected ones, don't like bots and don't
wanna wait hours for a slot opening somewheres...

Another question: after "MAPS", the biggest directories are
"SOUNDS" (1 GB) and "MATERIALS" (250MB), which seem to be related to
the downloaded maps... Are they also safe to delete like MAPS?

Thakn you very much for all this helpand patience...

Anything is safe to delete in that folder, it just means that some of those
Sounds used for custom maps will have to be re-downloaded the next time you
want to play the map that the sounds use.

What I'm saying is, no, it's not dangerous to delete those.
