Ant - 19 Sep 2007 09:22 GMT Hello!
I already own the original Half-Life 2 (finished) and Episode 2 (finished) from long ago. I also have Steam (duh, required) and a couple free third party mods (e.g., Insurgency and Counter-Strike [HL2]).
From what I read, only the orange box is available with all the listed items I bought and the upcoming ones (Portal, Episode 2, and Team Fortress 2. Does that mean I to buy the stuff I already own? Or can I just buy the three items I don't have (not online) from its retail box?
Thank you in advance. :)

Episode 2 is what's upcoming, and probably the major part of The Orange Box.

As far as I know, you cannot yet buy _only_ HL2:Ep2 and/or TF2 and/or Portal.
BTW, finally got TF2 working, and it looks very impressive. I've not had time to go online, but started the 'Hydro' map in 'Spectator' mode, cycling through the Developer's Commentary, and looking at all the classes. Wow, is all I can say. But as mentioned, I haven't played it yet, so I hope my 'wow' will remain then too ;)
>Thank you in advance. :) You're welcome.

And, Valve has said you can give away the stuff you have double. So perhaps there's someone you know you can make happy with HL2 and/or HL2:Ep1?

I agree with the other poster, he says the contents The Orange Box, excluding the 'double' stuff is easily worth the amount of money they ask.
I do, however, disagree on the perceived value of Ep2: Valve has been very busy with this, and looking at all the playing videos released a _LOT_ of new content is in this. Looking forward to smacking some Striders with the new Strider-buster for instance, and I'm also looking forward to the underground stuff. ;)
I need to get my new rig before Episode 2 is available, because if TF2 is any indication, I need to turn down a lot of detail on my current rig to get the framerates up (P4-2.4GHz-1GB/AGP7600GT-256MB).
Regards,
Patrick.

But yeah, Valve have done a hell of a lot more than just knocking up new levels.
Three games for $50 is peanuts though.

It in any case looks like a lot more than just knocking up new levels, or, at least, not a plain re-hash of the old stuff.
>Three games for $50 is peanuts though. Exactly, and a price I gladly paid. Now to find some time to become a TF2-expert! :)

Couldn't seem to make him run either.
The class has certainly changed quite a bit.
Mike Roman - 19 Sep 2007 09:43 GMT > Hello! > [quoted text clipped - 8 lines] > > Thank you in advance. :) Well, you certainly can't buy them individually at the moment, but who knows what'll happen in the coming months?
I was thinking along the same lines as you but then I thought - $50 (inc. tax) is pretty damned cheap for TF2 (which is EXCELLENT - played it yesterday - easily worth £20UKP,) Portal (which certainly LOOKS excellent - and if it's anything like Narbacular Drop, will be! - and worth another £15UKP to £20UKP assuming it delivers) and Episode 2 (I'd happily pay a tenner for it) - three of the best games I'll play in the next five years for that price...? I'd be tempted to ignore the fact that they're bundling in the stuff you already own - or maybe consider that they're including that stuff for free for people who are new to the whole HL2 experience. Just look at the ridiculous prices they charge for a SINGLE game in the stores...
My recommendation - cough up and get playing TF2 today!
And no, I don't work for Valve! It's a damn shame - the poor guys are just trying to do the best and the flak they have to take for it!

By that stage you will have 5 copies of HL2, 4 of EP1, 3 of EP2 etc, dont you think thats just a little silly?
Companies hear stuff like "I'd happily pay" then they are just going to shovel more of this episode/small download content crap onto us...
Its rubbish imo.

JAB - 20 Sep 2007 08:19 GMT >>> Hello! >>> [quoted text clipped - 39 lines] > > Cheers Dre As long as the complete package represents good value for money then I would not have any problem in purchasing it (surely that's the point isn't it, so if you already have HL2 and HL2:EP1 you just attach a £0 to their value) and it's not as though there isn't an option to purchase then new content as individual packages although it will cost you $80 for all of them!
If you don't think it's good value for money then fair enough don't buy it. So for example I didn't buy HL2:EP1 until it was down to £5.
Dre - 20 Sep 2007 23:49 GMT >>>> Hello! >>>> [quoted text clipped - 50 lines] > If you don't think it's good value for money then fair enough don't buy > it. So for example I didn't buy HL2:EP1 until it was down to £5. Oh dont worry, if the orange box isn't the same price as ep1 was then I wont be buying it until its in the *cheap* bin, I'm in no rush to play it!

JAB - 23 Sep 2007 11:16 GMT >>>>> Hello! >>>>> [quoted text clipped - 54 lines] > > Cheers Dre Fair enough - I'm already happily playing the TF2 beta and it's very impressive so far. Just the kind of MP game I like - very hectic, enjoyable even by the casual gamer, nice spread of classes and doesn't take itself that seriously.
Possibly a master piece in the making.

I don't care what other stuff they bundle with it for free. It costs me nothing as I don't have to download it again. And... the nice bit is that I can give this free stuff to someone else and they get quite a lot for nothing.
What do you mean "small download" anyway? I downloaded TF2 and it certainly wasn't small. In fact, I'm downloading the server content right now and it's taking ages.
I can see where you're coming from because, at first, I thought like you did, but then I had the treatment - ahem - I thought about it for a while and decided to look at it that I'm getting excellent value for money and the daft guys at Valve are throwing in some other stuff for free that I don't want and that I can give away.
Cheers yerself! ;o)
Dre - 20 Sep 2007 23:48 GMT >> So you would also be happy if they did the same with ep3, 4 and 5?? >> [quoted text clipped - 24 lines] > > Cheers yerself! ;o) When I say small downloads I mean stuff like those downloads for Oblivion.
The thing I have a problem with is I dont think that the orange box is going to be the same price as ep1, I can pretty much guarantee that in Australia, they will charge us more and this is what irks me. If the orange box is going to be the same price as Ep1 I'll shut up.
Cheers Dre
Gil - 21 Sep 2007 02:22 GMT I bought HL2 the day it came out, and I am not going to get the "orange box". Portal is just a distraction, TF2 would be interesting if I spent any time playing the current Steam MP library that I already own. EP2 is 6 hours of gameplay according to PC Gamer mag, and I figure that time is on my side.
Soon enough, it will be stand alone for $10. I am NOT buying software I already own.

I'm interested in Portal (I really liked that part of Prey), but not TF2 much. Ep2 is what I'm after so for me to get it, I get lumped with all this other crap I really dont want.
I hope you are right about ep2 being standalone soon for cheap!
Cheers Dre

My personal opinion is that it'll certainly be available standalone but its unlikely to be available 'soon' for cheap. One thing Valve are not good at is lowering prices like retail do. You may be waiting some time.
Personally I find the pricing in the Orange box to be pretty good. I no longer play MP but if there was a game that could get me back into it then TF2 could be it - I'll definitely be trying it out. Portal looks fascinating but of course I'm really waiting for Ep2. They say its 20% longer than Ep1 and we already know its much more varied in settings and gameplay than Ep1 so that's worth a few quid extra in my book. Yes, I already have HL2 and Ep1 but there is no limit on time as to when you can gift them and with Christmas coming up... well, I know a couple of people I could make very happy come Christmas morning for a very low price.

No, and if you bought the Orange box you wouldn't be buying software you already own. The price is for Episode 2, TF2 and Portal. The other bits are freebies to entice new players in.
