I should qualify that, My games and other stuff seems to be OK as I can play
online and all, just the Store section not working, or is it overloaded with
preorders?

Thanks, Rene

Perhaps not with pre-orders (that'd be nice, for Valve in any case! :)),
but with people accessing the new 'Friends' addition to Steam?

This is just speculation from my part, but I noticed the Friends tab was
(also) really really slow...

Speaking of the friends bit of steam, is there any way to just turn it off?

I dont go into steam much, but when I do, I get blasted with hundreds of
"blah is your friend" or "blah wants to add you" etc, I dont know anyone on
steam so it just gets in the way and its annoying...

Is there anything to pre-order besides the Orange Box.  I already have
all that stuff; I just want HL2 Ep2, Portal and TF2.

Me too, I'm hoping another box comes out like EP1 with EP2, TF2 and Portal
in it on *disc*.  I'm still not keen to purchase downloads, I prefer a
disc...

They do at least let you 'gift' the games you've already got to someone
else.

I think it still works out cheaper to buy the Orange Box than to buy all the
new games seperately.

Last time I checked, the deal for steam users was that buying Ep2 gave
you TF2 and Portals for free.    AFAIK, this offer is still going to
be there (probably cost 30 quid or something).   That's got to be
cheaper than the orange box.

How much did we pay for episode 1 when it came out? I thought that was
like $20.
Just to get my bearings, how much do you pay in £ or € for a game that
in the U.S. costs $49.95 (e.g. Bioshock lists for that price now)? Does
it go straight up along the exchange rate? I seem to remember someone
saying it doesn't always work that way.

I'd have no problem paying between $25-30 for Ep2+Portal+TF2.

Ah, I'm not sure if the prices vary between countries on Steam.   I
didn't buy Ep1, so I have no idea how much that costs.  The typical PC
game in the UK is £25-£30 (And has been for about 20 years)..  at the
current exchange rate, I guess thats about $50-60US.

The original plan was for Valve to sell Ep2, TF2 and Portal called the
'Black box' and HL2, EP1, EP2, TF2 Portal as the 'Orange box'
Valve has since dropped the black box and now if you want TF2\EP2\Portal
you have to "rebuy" HL2 and EP1.
They are giving HL2 and Ep1 out in separate keys that you can give as
gifts to others on Steam.
This ought to send PC Lamer or whats his name into a real tailspin.

Well I'm a sucker for TF2 after all these years so I guess I can say I
paid $45 for TF2, got Portal and EP2 for free. I will still have HL2 and
Ep1 keys to give away to family then too.

And I'm a sucker for HL2: Ep2, and I'm hoping I'm going to like TF2 too.
So that's why I bought The Orange Box the moment I could pre-order it.
Besides, I've enjoyed the entire Half Life series a lot, so I have no
problems paying Valve to contintue this.

I will make my brother happy with my 'spare' Episode 1, and I will have to
find a 'worthy' recipient of my 'spare' HL2 key. But it's nice to be able
to give this to someone, in a safe way, so that they can enjoy it.

I'm looking forward to TF2, hopefully I can 'unlock' it this evening, and
get some playing time in. ;)

Patrick.

buy the Orange Box for XBox360.

I went out and bought and XBox 360 on Friday night.  My gaming computer
is aging, it has a GeForce 6800 in it with an AthlonXP processor, so I
needed to upgrade soon to keep up and to get a system the way I want it
would probably run at least $800.  The 360 cost $349.99.  I just bought
a 42" HDTV and needed an upconverting to 1080p DVD player and eventually
an HDTV DVD player.  The 360 handles both of those needs (you have to
purchase a separate HD DVD add-on, which I'll do eventually).  The 360
also integrates with the rest of my home network so I can play music and
videos on my TV or over my sound system.  You can also directly download
movies and TV shows with the XBox 360.  That's a nice feature set for a
device even if you don't include the gaming factor.  I might have been
willing to spend $350 on something like that even if I couldn't play
games on it.

I bought Bioshock to go with the 360 and it plays and looks great.  So
besides all the above it's an excellent gaming platform.  It would be
sad to give up gaming on the PC, I've been doing so for a long time, but
it feels like a logical step.

I have a nice laptop that plays games all right but I never have a real
mouse hooked up to it so I rarely game with it.  My old desktop that I
gamed on is almost never turned on.  I want my laptop for work and
school but don't want to stop gaming all together.

The XBox 360 was the answer.

Could you remind me of your full street address please? :p

Seriously though, yeah, a friend of mine has a similar setup (but with a
wii) and it makes a lot of sense, its a much more sociable, relaxed way
to play games: no sitting at a desk with your 'rig' any more. All you
need to do is have some sort of media centre hooked up to it to feed you
music and crap TV shows and you're sorted :)

Gaming on a large high def screen with a wireless remote from your couch
is a much more enjoyable than hunkering over at my work desk.  There is
a lot of freedom that you give up with what you're able to configure, no
editing of autoexec files on the 360.  Those wild and woolly days were
mostly over for me on the PC anyway.  Even my aging system ran things at
medium default settings fine with no extra tweaking necessary.  I'll be
curious to see how playing HL2 translates to the XBox controller.
I already have windows media center on my laptop which automatically
hooked up with the 360.  Microsoft hasn't decided to support Divx or
Xvid yet so that's a problem.  I want to be able to grab the hi-def
torrents of Heroes when it starts next week.

Well add me to the list of people that think thats crap.  I'd like the black
box, but to get ep2 I now need the orange box, terrific...  ...and I'm not
getting anything via Steam btw so looks like I'll end up with 23 copies of
HL2 by the end of the episodes.

I agree, that's pretty crap - though it looks to me that the price tag
for the orange box is reasonable, so i'll probably still get the orange
box and write off the other licence for HL2.

Meh, I'll probably do the same, but if the orange box in Australia isn't the
same price as ep1 was *then* I'll be pissed off cause then Valve are making
me pay for HL2 again.  I've got a bad feeling it wont be, which means I'll
be getting it when it gets cheaper and the same as EP1, I'm not paying for
HL2 again and I'm not in any hurry :)

Yep, did exactly that yesterday. It's 45 dollars, I think, which works
out at under 30 pounds - for Ep2, Portal and TF2 that's a bloody
bargain, even without the extra licences for HL2 and Ep1.

Plus, apparently, I get on the beta for TF2, but no idea how that's
going to work.

On a side note, am I the only one watching each of the 'Meet the...'
movies and thinking each time "Yes! I am SO going to play *that*
character..."? I never really played TF - did you tend to specialise in
one role, or swap freely between roles depending on what was needed?

Exactly. I've had a lot of fun and exceptional value-for-money with their
previous products, I pre-ordered The Orange Box the moment I could.
Whether that makes me a 'Valve-fan-boy' or not: I don't really care. They
are a 'good' company in my eyes, and good companies will be supported by
me, and my money.

>Plus, apparently, I get on the beta for TF2, but no idea how that's

No idea really. I started Steam this morning, before going to work, and I
noticed TF2 was moved to 'Released' status. However, when trying to launch
it, I get a small Steam window saying "Launching Team Fortres 2", then a
bit of disk-activity, and nothing. Restarted Steam, tried again: same
thing. Verified Game cache files for TF2, retry: same thing. Restarted the
computer, retry: same thing.

Anybody got TF2 to start up? I didn't have time to look for a log file of
some sort, but I suppose something will have been barfed down on the disk
if it bombed out. Will try to find that this evening.

It's been a while since I last played TF, but I think I mainly played two
classes, depending on the state my team was in: if they were having
trouble defending their base, I'd play a 'Soldier' class: throwing out
Bazookas is a good way to turn the tide.

If the team was on the offense, I'd sometimes also play the Sniper; some
support from 'above' is usually pretty welcome.

I'm looking forward to the classes in TF2; so much to try out, so little
time... ;)

Patrick.

I always played different roles more so depending on what map or what
type of play (CTF, Push) or how bad I was sucking at another role.
eg. Sniper wars in Crossover and 2 Fort.
eg. Spy in 2fort for some sniper stabbing.

I ended my dialup TFC time by playing on a Dustbowl only server. That's
where you spawn and have to carry flag to their cap over 3 different
sections.
I really got into it and played mostly as spy or medic for the
concussion jumps.
Or went whatever class seemed to be needed at that time.

I'm now afraid that TF2 won't be like the glory days.

I'm sure I don't need to tell *you* what class I used to play alot in
TFC ;-)

Although, actually, I used to find the game far more enjoyable when I
got out of my bad habits and started varying alot more..   I remember
enjoying playing an engineer alot on Rock2 (I think that's the "gas gas
gas" map?)  .. and I had some great times as an evil b*stard medic too.
I guess my favourite class varied between maps really.

The only classes which I never really managed to get into were scout and
demoman   (as demoman I could never get my grenades to actually /hit/
anything!)

Scout is still not for me. He seems more powerful now too as I have been
shotgunned and head bopped with his billy club by more scouts now. I was
soldier and little bugger wouldn't hold still and shotgunned me before I
got him.

Ahh.. new Demoman has 'sticky' grenades which can cling to any surface
for proper hiding. Then wait for some slick-a.s scout to come running in
for a cap.. right-click BOOOOM!

Spy class is really nice now. He has knife, gun and sentry gun\dispenser
electro-zapper. Spy can change disguise to any other enemy class AND has
a cloaking device to turn invisible. Difference this time is that a
teammate spy doesn't look like and enemy to you... he looks like a spy
but has a 'paper mask' to show what he's hidden as trails fumes when
he's cloaked invisible.

I think the scout class is not at all well balance at the moment - far too
lethal and far too fast. Sniper has been rendered pretty much useless for
anything other than camping as well - a big shame, as I absolutely love
ranging about as a sniper.

The fact there's no nades will take some getting used to as well. TF2 is

I was wondering that whether the first Steam update will tone down the
Scout. The speed isn't an issue to me but damn is his shotgun lethal to
everyone.
Played Scout on Hydro last night and capped capture points and was
taking on a HWGay and Soldier and almost got them both.

Yes i do miss them nades but not the nade campers in Dustbowl. Remember
the nade spam when the gates opened. Took 5 minutes of constant deaths
to make it through.
Maybe now that there is the kill tracking system they don't want that
nade spam to throw off the stats.

Speaking of stats... the great wrecker of any games as so many people
become stat-whores instead of team players. Too much focus on the stats
after ever round or every death.
I find myself drawn into that also and I can't help it.

Hehehe... I call the fatties that too... ;o)

Something I've noticed with sniper and the unzoomed rifle - you could just
stick something on your monitor to give you a sight - although they'll
probably change that now that I've pointed it out - VALVE ARE STALKING ME

Yup yup yup. Actually, I'm trying to get my own server working (but getting
some daft error at the moment) so that I'll be able to kick and generally

Sniper seems to be 'easier' now... As long as you are scoped you are
charging your shot. But quick shots take a few hits to take out even
another sniper so you always hang around scoped... perfect targets for
b@st@rd spies. :-)

Yeah, exactly. Sniper has been somewhat emasculated... I was a dab-hand and
popping people right beside me with the old sniper rifle - not any longer...
perhaps someone will "mod" the thing back to the way it used to be...

I'm not sure if I agree with that - such changes would be in danger of
turning it into a TFC port on the source engine just with funky graphics
and sounds.    IMHO, TF2 was never supposed to be a simple engine
conversion but a brand new game with new gameplay dynamics, drastically
different to previous versions of TF.

I think alot of people are expecting TF2 to be like TFC:Source, but
anyone who really wants that should try the Fortress Forever mod
omstead, which is apparently quite faithful to the original TFC :)

Great - now if you could just fix the sniper in FF...

Well then you need the Fortress Forever mod. Someone wanted the old TFC
in Source.

Already tried it and it's great but - sniper is broke:

I'm experiencing the same as those guys - shots that I KNOW were dead on
target don't connect.

HL2:EP1 seems to have stayed at £15 in the UK ever since it was released
which may have been ok two years ago but seems very steep now. I didn't
end up buying it until it was on Steam at $10 so roughly £5. I don't
believe that are regional prices on Steam accept those caused by sales tax.
