New computer slower than old one?

Just got a brand-new HP Pavilion, 3 GB of ram, Windows Vista.

Unfortunately, it seems to run slower than my old one with 512 MB!  At
least at Counter-Strike it does.

Dropped all the video switches to the bottom, even though it
recommended far higher, still kind of choppy with more than a few
bots.

No real video card, just integrated graphics with 128 MB, probably buy
a card someday, but it's no worse than my old PC.

I know Vista takes lots of ram, but I was hoping for a little boost
with 3 GB!

Only other thing running is Windows Sidebar.....

Just hoping there's something I'm not thinking of, maybe?

Thanks, all!

Stating what graphics card you used to have and what integrated
graphics your new machine has. If it is an Intel integrated chipset,
it will be worse than abysmal for gaming.

It doesn't matter how much RAM you have if you have a bad graphics
card as you say that you do (as it'll cause a bottleneck in
performance). Intergrated chips are never going to run games all that
well. Spend a bit of money on a card and then you'll see how well your
rig can perform....

Thanks for your replies, guys.

I see Winupdate d/l'd something, supposed to help with performance.
Not hoping for much, but still....

I see "Marvel Ultimate Alliance" needs a card with 256 MB of ram, so
I'll be getting one of those at some point.

Thanks again!

I never heard of integrated graphics card having more than 32 MB
memory...

They usually share main memory and you can decide how much you want to
give them.

Really ? For a while, I was using a computer with an integrated
graphics card for playing games. I discovered that my computer was
fast enough to play some games (e.g. GTA: San Andreas), but could not
run them. I discovered that the game required at least 64 MB video
memory, and the graphics card had only 32 MB. I did a search inside of
the BIOS, and discovered the option something like: "Use the CPU
memory to complement the integrated GPU memory, thus boosting it from
32 to 64 MB". I triggered this option... but the game still did not
run. (The processor was AMD 64 2GHz.)

Anybody answer me how to enable 64 MB of memory when you have only 32
MB of memory in the integrated graphics card ?

What game are you trying to play?
Maybe your intergrated graphics chip set (you do not have a "video
card") is not powerful enough to run it.

Hmm...you need: (Minimum spec) WinXP, DirectX 9.0c , 64Mb VIDEO CARD
(Geforce3 or better),256 Mbs of ram.

So, can I use the integrated graphics card ? Bump the memory to 64
MB ?

My computer has Athlon X2 and 7600GT. I am also playing Bioshock at
the moment. Someone in my family has this unupgradeable Acer computer
and wants to play GTA:SA. Yes, I tried to increase in BIOS the amount
of available memory to the integrated graphics card from 32 MB and 64
MB, and it did not work. But perhaps I missed something else which was
important at making it work; thus I asked.
