Funny you should say that.... I was waiting for the right time to post:
I've just completed it yesterday, after finally building a pc able to
play the damn thing. I'd played it originally through to the end of
Nova Prospekt, before the sound stuttering and variable framerate made
it unpleasant to play.
With a good framerate, the early stages were a joy to repeat (I even
took dog's ball through ravenholme and beyond), and the rest was a
blast. Loved the strider battles, was wowed by the 'pod' journey
through the tower and in retrospect was glad the physics gun wasn't
available earlier - what a cracking bit of kit!
Either I've got really good at fps games (unlikely, since I've spent
the last 2 years in WoW) or HL2 was relatively easy - I hardly died at
all, was rarely below 80% health, and the puzzles seemed relatively
simple. That's not to put it down at all, though, since it was such an
enjoyable ride. Still definitely in my top 5 games.
So, what's next? Should I bother with Lost Coast, or move straight on
to Episode 1? What's the news on Episode 2? Do people still play
deathmatch, or CS? I've sort of ignored much of the HL news recently
(except for keenly anticipating Portals and TF2).
Oh, and has anyone linked the Heavy Weapon's Guy movie yet? Brilliant.

Lost Coast is little more than a technology demonstrator. You'll finish it
in about 10 or 15 minutes probably.

It feels good to get it off your chest, doesn't it?
:-)

I finally downloaded Steam and I'm playing it on my POS Circuit City
box. It's working OK, surprisingly. Hardly any eye-candy but no major
issues.

I'm sort of 'meh' abut the whole thing. I quit during the underground
garage zombie part and left it alone for a few weeks but I'm on the
last little bit, now.

Easy, yes.
Top 5? I'll play it again straight through at some point and decide then.

I have been playing some Deathmatch.
I am *waaaaaay* rusty but I still usually have fun.
I have Lost Coast and Episode One. Maybe I'll hurry up and finish HL2
and check out the other ones.

Sounds like issues other than the PC unless the PC was really, really
dire. Great to play as it was meant to be played though

Best new device in a game for a long, long time (and probably since).

I died a few times first time through but have played it numerous times
since with hardly a death. I think harder games have come out sice
(FEAR, Stalker etc) and this has honed my FPS skills to a stage where
HL2 isn't a challenge. But, as you say, a really enjoyable ride

Lost Coast is a 15min tech demo - sure there's a little gameplay but
it's the commentary that makes it worth trying out. Really interesting
IMHO.
Episode 1 is more of the same as HL2 which is defintely not a bad thing.
I found it was harder (which was good) but haven't played it since a
patch allegedly dumbed down a section in a dark underground garage. Bit
wary of that cos I think I'll hate it. Well worth getting into but it
should take only around 7hrs (or at the rate you play around 14months) ;-)
News on Ep2 is more open areas and some choice as to approach in some
areas but otherwise... more of the same. Apparently we also learn a lot
more in Ep2 of the story and of g-man.
> Oh, and has anyone linked the Heavy Weapon's Guy movie yet? Brilliant.
Love it. Really looking forward to that one.

Well: old pc: crap gaming, new pc: perfect gaming.... only other things
that changed are probably patches from valve, I guess.

I was on about the physics gun (the insanely overpowered blue zapper at
the end), rather than the gravity gun (orange one) which I suspect you
mean (and I agree with!)

:) I've had a mega-fast retuning of my fps skills, which had completely
atrophied in WoW, with Stalker and HL2 getting an airing for the first
time in ages. Stalker is definitely more unforgiving, and I'm not
enjoying the general 'feel' of the game as much... I feel like I'm
wandering into somewhere uninvited, and don't really 'click' with the
weapon controls, feedback, etc, whereas HL2 just completely revolves
around me and my gaming experience, and the weapons are fine-tuned to a
beautiful degree. I'll give Stalker more time, and I think it'll get
more rewarding once I get any sort of weapon with a scope!
