Well, I got me a new computer. Thank you to all who counseled me. Lot's of
excellent and interesting advice. Much of it was encouraging me to build my
own computer, but I chickened out on that plan.
After I got the laptop and set it up I had toI call Dell technical support
for some questions . I got excellent help. Three separate technicians. One
was in India. Hard to understand but a nice guy and very helpful. He said it
was really hot in India. One from Canada, and he too was helpful. And the
gal, I didn't ask her where she was.
Dell Enspiron/Inspiron laptop. 17 inch screen and I think the thing is
actually a desktop replacement cause its heavy and fairly large. Got the
upgrade graphics card and 2 gigs of ram.
So finally I am playing Half-Life 2. Graphics are excellent. Not sure yet if
I like it as much as Half Life 1 or Heart of Evil or They Hunger. But, it is
getting better. I am in Ravenhorst or whatever its called.
I have a question, if you wouldn't mind? - is how can I get to aghl through
Vista? It has a newsgroup feature, but it looks as though the only
newsgroups available concern discussions of Microsoft products. Vista
doesn't offer Outlook Express which is the program I have been using to read
newgroups.
By the way, I get car sick playing HL2. Particularly using that air boat.
Thanks again for your help.

There are many newsreaders out there to choose from: Xnews, Free Agent,
Mozilla Thunderbird (which is an e-mail client as well). Plus others.
They're all fairly similar to OE and many would say superior.
If you're a modern fellow you should be using Firefox and Thunderbird as
your browser/e-mail/newsreader combo.
All work fine in Vista. I'm typing this on a Vista machine and using
Thunderbird.

I don't think his problem is a newsreader (Windows Mail is supposed to
have a decent one) but a subscription to a news service.
Who were you with before on XP Scott? Was it a free or subscribed
service? Are you still with them? Have you put all their server
details into the newsreader you're using now? If so you should then be
able to subscribe to all the groups available on that server including AGHL

Lyman,
I used Mozilla firefox for a while on a Windows XP machine with an HP
Deskjet 9800 Printer.
Mozilla crashed the printer every time I tried to print from the browser.
I'd get thirty pages of nothing and had to reset the printer between each
page. Got so annoying that I removed Mozilla and vowed never to go back.
Did you ever have printing problems from thunderbird?

I've never had the problems you describe with FireFox, although I print on
an IBM laser and an Epson inkjet. All of which suggests you've abandoned a
good, non M$ browser based on a print driver fault....?

I've had printing difficulties with Firefox on Linux, so I went back to
Mozilla which works flawlessly!

I've had no problems printing from Tbird or Firefox.

Well, the printer works fine with every other program (Office
word/excel/visio/powerpoint, outlook express, AutoCAD 2000, autoCAD 2004 and
Adobe Acrobat) Thus I concluded that since it crashed ONLY with firefox,
that was where the fault lies. If the printer failed with any other program
on a routine basis, I'd call the HP tech support wizards in New Delhi and
sit on hold for 3 hours.
(I will say that HP makes the worlds worst printers but they also make the
ONLY affordable printer capable of printing on 11x17 sheets of paper. So, I
am stuck with an HP9800. I'd toss this thing from the roof in a heartbeat if
I had a decent alternative.)
I liked Mozilla's ability to download multiple files and manage them. This
is a feature that I used frequently, however, I would forget that I was
using Mozilla and print a page from the web browser (I print from the
browser a lot for work purposes) and spend the next 30 minutes clearing a
stupid print job from the print memory. This often required shutting down
the PC, unplugging the printer and then re-booting everything, clearing the
print job from memory and rebooting a 2nd time.
I've come so close to tossing this god damn printer out of my 3rd floor
window, it should be listed as a hazard to pedestrians....
So, Firefox is toast. Problem solved.

I guess if you are looking for a news server there are free ones.
I use news.sisna.com which is some ISP's news server that doesn't
require a login. It's up mostly and I believe it carries all the posts.
Doesn't have any binary newsgroups but that's not why we are here is it. :-)

You can use the newreader in Vista - the one you are probably uising
for e-mail, called "windows mail".
By default it shows you Microsot related newsgroup - but if you go to
Tools --> accounts ---> Add ---> newsgroup ....
Then you can set it to read any other newsgroup server.
HTH
Personally - I use Agent
