...Ravenholme. It's scary. I don't like scary.

Just replaying HL2 on my new system (and, by the by, my new Dell 2407WFP -
which doesn't suck too much!) and it's all got a lot more immersive.

So how can I - ahem - bypass Ravenholme please?

Ah, you chicken, you're just going to have to toughen up. I agree it's
scary, but didn't you also find it fun? It's chock full of clever
traps, brilliant details and just plain exhilarating gameplay moments.
It's definitely one of the most memorable game sections I've ever
played (on a par with the asylum in Thief 3), and the game would be
poorer without it.

I understand ymmv, but come on - gravity gun *and* circular saw disks?
What's not to like?

No idea if you can bypass it, but Ravenholm scared me the first time
through. Garry's mod is a good antidote: Spawn a few fast zombies and poison
zombies, and have a scrap with them on one of the featureless maps. On the
most recent playthrough, I turned off the sound just to try and make it a
bit harder.

Whenever Father Grigori is around, let him do all the fighting. He's much
tougher than you, but that's probably because he wears a dark-grey polyester
jumper instead of an HEV suit.

Fast zombies are more fearsome than they deserve. Once they get to you,
their first attack is slow to come, and a bit farty. Let them get close
before taking them out with a headshot.

Poison zombies are best dealt with using explosive barrels. If one of their
headcrabs gets you, just retreat until the poison wears off.

Thanks! Good tips...

It is creepy. I suggest setting to easy, turn down the sound and blasting
through it.

You've got to roll in the scaryness until you become one with it. I
didn't like it first time through either, and it took ages for me to get
the want-to to do it again, but the second and third and fourth and
fifth and so on times were really fun. Now that I knew what was around
that corner, it was a fun challenge to see how much ammo/health I could
ferry through. Not to mention see how many multi-kills I could get with
a sawblade (I think my record is 6 or 7). :-D

Oh! That's right, that makes it oh-so-much more fun when you have one of
Dog's balls to play with. *snicker*

Bah... left it back there in all the excitement. How long can you take that
with you?

I've managed to get it as far as the flaming zombie trap that Grigori
sets up.

I never even managed to keep it longer than the game of catch. He'd always
lose it and go pick something else up to throw.

Is it worth keeping?

I've never managed to get Ball past Ravenholm.  It won't go across to
Grigoris area at endlevel.  But it is fun to watch the zombies  gang up on
it.

Not first time through Ravenholme but definitely on the second.  It's
almost mandatory to try it at least once ;-)

Yeah, never got it further than the basket to Grigori's church.  Really
does make the level a lot of fun in a new way though - scary heart
pounding fun without it and then magic laugh out loud fun with it.  You
*really* have to play that level both ways...

Ok, I played through Rave with the ball and it rules! You can even pound
poison zombies with it.

Nice One!!  After talking about it here I also had to go back and try it
again.  Still enjoy it though I'd forgotten how easy it is to blow the
ball up if you're not careful  ;-)

Only kill things if they are in your way....stuff there respawns...I usually
just run through it slaying / burning all in my way, running past the slower
zombies...in fact i think that may be how they intended it to be played

Civilian_Target - 07 Jul 2007 10:13 GMT
Same, played it on hard every time and there's just no way you can
possibly stand and fight once it gets going, the only thing to do is run
and kill as much as you can on the way!
