HL Source - F5 = swift exit?

So, new computer, excellent excuse to try playing through HL again.

Keep hitting F5 to quicksave (I know it should be F6 but I've just been
playing Riddick and can't break the F5 habit) but it dumps me out to the
desktop (without saving). Is that normal?

Also, I'm sure when I played HL before I was able to see what weapon I was
carrying, but my hands/weapon are invisible. Is this a switchable thing or
just a bug with my setup? Doesn't make the game impossible but it's hard to
tell when you're reloading, apart from the fact that your gun don't work no
more...

Cheers

I don't believe so. I would double check your key bindings in options. I
thought the key to quick-quit the game was F10?

Sounds to me like you've edited the config.cfg file. Did you play any
half-life mods since you've gone back to Half-life?

Nope, fresh install on a fresh PC, hence my confusion. I've never changed
bindings (or anything other than video settings) for any of the HL family on
previous machines nor this one, always thought it best to try and learn to
use the defaults.

Will have a root around for a config.cfg file, ta.

If it's a fresh install then f5 should not be quitting you to desktop.
I'm at a loss, you'll need to ask one of the more Half-life savy people
here.

Have you ran a google search on a generic error of that type yet?

Well... nothing I'm getting worked up about, just that half my games use F5
and the rest use F6 to quicksave. My general FPS playing style is the cheeky
old "inch and save" so I'm constantly stabbing blindly at the middle set of
function keys. Will change the bindings.

Had a quick go but ran out of arsedness :)

Time for more shooting

Pussies....auto save's or nothing.....

Well, it's not so much inch and save as much as "waltsz along until you
hit a trigger point and then back off and snipe one by one". That's what
I loved about STALKER, there weren't (hardly) any trigger points. It
kept me on my toes.

Yes, let's replay the same section over and over for no reason other
than we wish to "test ourselves"

Play the game. Enjoy the story. Rinse. Repeat

Pfft!  The most tense games ever had no auto saves, your of the spectrum era
I thought you'd appreciate that!

Well, sure, have fun, however you do it is irrelevant, not gonna stop me
taking the piss though :P :P

Quit pointing out the obvious dude :p

Swings and roundabouts I guess. Things like Sands Of Time was just
frustrating with the check points and although that did add an awful lot
of tension it also proved to be a pain in the neck.

Uhhhhh.......jeeeze.  Did you ever think to look through your Options
settings and check the keybindings....?    Ummm.....  Duh.

Mmm-hmm. Had a look, couldn't find an option to switch Player-weapon-in-view
anywhere, but I'm not sure what the option would be called.

Not really bothered about how to change the quick-exit / F5 thing, I just
don't remember it ever doing it before and I don't tit about with the
bindings. Didn't even know there /was/ a quick exit option. Typical I'd only
find the boss-key now I'm my own boss.

Ta anyway

Bring down your console and type in R_DRAWVIEWMODEL 1
then hit submit.... This should bring your weapon back into view....

Tried it but no cigar. Odd.

I hear of a number of problems with these nVidia cards (8800) so I'll put it
down to that for now...

Thanks anyway,

I believe the default setting for total quit is F10, in any case, unbind F5
(or rebind it to quicksave)

Fodders post should solve your viewmodel problem I think.  Wouldn't hurt to
run a file check through steam also, something aint adding up considering
its a new install.

NB:  Just noticed it is HL:S you are talking about, was it HL original you
played before, I aint played HL:S so dont know if r_drawviewmodel works / is
off by default etc.

OK all you HL geeks, I thought the view aspect of this post was changeable
in the "console."

I do not have the data in front of me at this point, so let the guessing
begin.
